Chapter 228 Stay Away From That Place
That day, after Madelyn finished her rehearsal, she was about to hurry home to care for Sebastian when Josiah suddenly called out to her. โHey, Madelyn! Wait for me!โ
โWhat is it?โ Madelyn turned around, her face brimming with confusion as she looked at Josiah.
Josiah promptly stepped forward and gently pulled her aside to a quiet spot. Looking around mysteriously to ensure they were out of earshot, he whispered, โRemember the matter you asked me to look into last time? I think thereโs been some progress.โ
โWhat progress? Spit it out!โ Anxiety consumed Madelyn in a flash.
Josiah leaned in closer to her ear and whispered, โIt seems like the medicine came from the black market.โ
โWhat?โ Madelyn froze, dumbstruck.
The black market was not uncharted waters. Previously in Rodunst, she had been to a black market once in search of Grimo. To put it nicely, places like those could be described as a black market. But if one were to be blunt, itโs nothing more than a hub for illicit transactions. Moreover, the black market within the country was notoriously ruthless, a den of every kind of character you could imagine. It was far more terrifying than the ones overseas.
No one could have imagined Eunice obtaining the calming medicine from that place. It was downright despicable!
Just then, Josiah started to recount his past. โIโve actually visited the black market once when I was around eighteen out of sheer curiosity. In the end, I almost got my leg cut off by someone there. Thankfully, I managed to escape after much difficulty. But when my dad found out, he was so angry that he almost broke my leg himself. Man, my leg sure had a close call! But honestly, after that, I never dared to go to places like the black market again. I didnโt expect that there would be people buying medicine from places like that. Manโฆโ Josiah trailed off, looking at Madelyn with an air of concern.
โSo, what do you plan to do next? That medicine clearly has a dubious origin. If it really came from the black market, then it would be best for us to avoid getting involved in this murky business. Even if we did delve into it, we might not be able to uncover anything!โ Josiah reasoned.
Upon hearing these words, Madelyn bit the insides of her cheek, lost in thought.
A moment later, she nodded curtly. โDonโt worry, I have a plan.โ
โWhatโs the plan?โ Josiah looked at her, puzzled.
Suddenly, a thought crossed his mind. Noโฆ It canโt be! This girl isnโt planning to go to the black market, is she?
He immediately cautioned, โMadelyn, listen to me. You absolutely must not act recklessly. The black market is not a place for a young lady like you.โ
After some contemplation, Madelyn responded with a knowing smile. โUnderstood, Iโll be careful.โ
A wave of annoyance washed over Josiah when he saw the smile on Madelynโs face. Tik. She clearly knows the dangers. Yet, sheโs still choosing to dive headfirst into it.
โMadelyn, I mean this with every fiber of my being: you cannot go to the black market,โ Josiah stressed. โThat place is filled with a bunch of reckless outlaws! Over the years, the police have been trying to eradicate that place, but theyโve never succeeded. Do you think youโd fare any better if you went in?โ
Josiah was on the brink of losing his sanity.
At that point, he could only convey the terrifying aspects of the black market in hopes that Madelyn would understand the dangers and decide to back down.
In the end, Madelyn just gave an indifferent smile. โI donโt care,โ she said, โIโm going anyway.โ
โMy goodness! Can you stop messing around?โ Josiah was on the verge of losing his mind.
Madelyn, however, suddenly became very determined. With a serious expression, she insisted, โIโm not messing around. This matter concerns my fatherโs life. No matter what, I have to uncover the person responsible!โ
Moreover, the most crucial point of concern was Euniceโs involvement with people from the black market. How could Madelyn possibly let that slide?
Madelyn was about to take over the company. It was time for her to get a clear understanding of Euniceโs background.
After all, in the future, Derek was bound to secure a position for Eunice in the company out of the fatherly instinct to take care of her.
Given the circumstances, it became even more crucial for Madelyn to ascertain whether Eunice would pose a security risk to the company.
After all, Madelyn didnโt want to live in a constant state of anxiety after assuming her new position.
โAre you truly sure about going?โ In the end, Josiah asked one last time, tentatively.
โOf course. I have to,โ Madelyn firmly decided.
Josiah sighed in resignation, โUghโฆ Alright. Since youโre so determined to go, bring me along when you set off.โ
Upon hearing this, Madelyn suddenly laughed and responded sarcastically. โNo way. That place is filled with outlaws. If they were to scare you to death, I fear even your ghost wouldnโt let me off the hook.โ
Having said that, Madelyn ran off with a hearty laugh.
It didnโt take long for Josiah to realize that Madelyn was calling him a coward.
He immediately chased after her, shouting, โYou brat! Youโve grown bold, havenโt you? Just wait till I get my hands on you! Iโll teach you a lesson you wonโt forget!โ
โCome on, then! Be my guest! Letโs see who gets the better of whom!โ Madelyn said with a chuckle.
โEff you! How dare you make a fool out of me again? I am Josiah Blume! If I donโt teach you a lesson today, my nameโsโฆโ Furious, Josiah chased Madelyn with all his might.
Just as Jillian and Tristan were struggling to find Madelyn and Josiah, they caught sight of the pair chasing each other playfully and couldnโt help but burst into laughter.
Night fell.
By the time Madelyn got home, Lydia had already prepared dinner.
At the same time, Sebastian was walking down the staircase with the help of his cane.
Upon seeing the situation, Madelyn quickly rushed forward to assist Sebastian before sharing dinner together.
While they were eating, Sebastian couldnโt help but notice there was something off about Madelyn. Why does this girl seem so preoccupied with her thoughts?
In the end, curiosity got the better of him. โWhatโs wrong?โ
โOh, itโs nothing,โ Madelyn said, snapping out of her daze.
In reality, she had been pondering over the words spoken by Josiah.
Shrugging it off, Sebastian served Madelyn some meat. With a gentle voice, he urged, โYou should eat some meat in moderation. Donโt just stick to vegetables all the time.โ
A warm feeling crept into Madelynโs heart. She chuckled mischievously. โIโm afraid of gaining weight, remember?โ
Nevertheless, she obediently ate the meat.
After swallowing, Madelyn casually asked, โBy the way, Sebastian, are you aware of a black market around here?โ
โWhy are you asking this?โ Sebastianโs expression darkened instantly when he heard the question.
Whatโs this girl up to now? Is she planning some mischief again?
Madelyn smiled as she nonchalantly shook her head. โItโs nothing, really. I heard some classmates talking about it today and it piqued my curiosity. But Sebastian, what exactly is the black market like?โ
Upon hearing her words, Sebastian couldnโt help but cast her a profound gaze.
However, Madelyn looked genuinely innocent. It was as if she really was asking merely out of curiosity. Reluctantly, he answered, โA place of utter chaos and uncleanliness.โ
โI see,โ Madelyn murmured, nodding thoughtfully upon hearing those words.
Sebastian looked at her, still feeling somewhat uneasy. He felt compelled to warn her, โYouโd better stay away from that place, understand?โ
