Chapter 3: Dream On
Madelyn checked her phone, estimating Sebastian's arrival at the office. Deciding, she instructed the driver to turn around. Moments later, she stood before the Lockhart Group building. The sunlight glinted off the skyscraper's glass exterior, causing her to squint. Sebastian was in the CEO's office, on the top floor.
Madelyn entered the grand hall, proceeding directly to the exclusive elevator. Recognized, she passed unhindered to the top floor. Sebastian's assistant, Malcolm Schultz, was startled to see her.
"Ms. Thorntonโฆ no, Mrs. Lockhart," Malcolm stammered, rising. "Howโฆ how are you here?"
In the past, Madelyn had openly disdaining Lockhart Group. Each visit brought chaos, leaving Malcolm to clean up the mess and endure Sebastian's wrath. He understandably feared her.
Madelyn recalled her past behavior, remembering Malcolm's past kindness, even his defense of her against Sebastian. She regretted her past actions. Her attitude now softened, and she asked gently, "Is Sebastian around?"
Malcolm, clearly surprised by her changed demeanorโshe previously always used Sebastian's full nameโreplied, "Mr. Lockhart is in a meeting."
"I'll wait for him," Madelyn said. "Please continue your work."
She entered the CEO's office. Malcolm, momentarily stunned, almost questioned her sanity, but quickly composed himself, attending diligently to her needs, serving tea, fearing another outburst.
Three hours later, Sebastian returned, noticing Malcolm's troubled expression. He opened the door to find Madelyn lounging on the couch, reading a magazine. His frown deepened. "Why are you here? What do you want?"
Madelyn sat up, her gaze meeting his. He was tall and imposing, his suit accentuating his physique. Even his displeasure was striking. Ignoring his icy aura, a thought struck her: This man is so attractive. Had I been blind before? Why did I let him go?
"Do I need a reason?" she asked playfully, snuggling closer. "It's almost noon. Lunch?"
Sebastian's expression hardened. "Another scheme to break our engagement? It's too late! Give it up!"
His tone startled her. He's so indifferent. I only have my past self to blame, she thought, remaining calm. She wrapped her arms around his neck. "Don't forget what you said. Lunch? Or should I ask Christopher?"
A hint of hostility flickered in Sebastian's eyes, but her provocation was irreversible. She had to proceed carefully, slowly rebuilding their relationship.
Sebastian, unable to decipher her game, eventually pried her arms away, grabbed his keys, and headed for the door. "What do you want to eat?"
Madelynโs smile widened. She took his hand. "I don't know. You choose?"
Sebastian silently released her hand. Noticing Malcolm, Madelyn linked arms with him. Before Malcolm could react, Sebastian reclaimed Madelynโs hand, placing it on his arm.
Madelyn chuckled. He still cares.
Malcolm, stunned, witnessed the burgeoning affection. It felt surreal. Madelyn never got close to Sebastian before. Has she lost her mind? he wondered.
