Chapter 4: The Madelyn of the Past
The sun blazed. Madelyn eagerly exited the black Rolls-Royce and entered a nearby Clusian restaurant, pulling the man behind her. It was a favorite; though sheโd only dined there once, the authenticity of the food had left a lasting impression. The local cuisine was renowned for its genuine flavors. Handing the menu to Sebastian across the table, she said, โYou choose. I find it difficult to decide.โ
Sebastian nonchalantly selected seven or eight dishes. They arrived swiftly. Madelyn began to eat, but after a few bites, she was shocked. Every dish was a favorite of hers. Her heart leaped; she nearly wept. He remembered all her favorite foods! But I donโt know his preferences at all! she thought. How I wish I could slap myself!
Noticing sheโd stopped, Sebastian tasted his food. โWhy did you stop? Donโt you like it?โ
Madelyn sniffled. โNo, itโs delicious.โ She resumed eating, distractedly watching him. Sebastian grew uncomfortable under her gaze. Setting down his fork, he frowned. โCome on, spill it. What are you really up to? Playing hardball isnโt working, so now youโre trying a roundabout approach?โ
Madelyn was speechless. Iโm just trying to discover his favorite foods. But she remained silent; his skepticism stemmed from her own past misdeeds. Even if she told the truth, he wouldn't believe her.
Instead, she changed the subject. โIโm returning to Lockhart Villa tonight. Would youโฆ like to come with me?โ
Sebastian was shocked. Madelyn would usually avoid Lockhart Villa. He concluded she had ulterior motives. He stood abruptly, his tone cold. โNo matter what youโre planning, you wonโt succeed! I will never agree!โ He turned and left.
Madelyn sighed. I was too eager. Too abrupt. Iโll need to take things one step at a time.
After dinner, Madelyn returned to Lockhart Villa. It felt like an eternity since her last return after her death. Yet, the past remained vividly clear. She nodded with a friendly smile to Lydia, the butler. Lydia stood frozen in shock. Madelyn smiled, said nothing, and ascended the stairs.
Opening her bedroom door, a warm feeling filled her heart. The familiar dรฉcor mirrored her room at the Thornton residence. Sebastian had clearly put thought into it; sheโd been unappreciative in the past.
Her reminiscing was interrupted by a ringing phone. It was Janessa. โMadelyn, where are you?โ
Madelyn didnโt lie. โAt Lockhart Villa.โ
A pause, then Janessaโs voice sharpened. โWhy are you there? What are you thinking?โ
Madelyn sneered. โItโs my marital home. Itโs only natural. Besides, I canโt go home. Father would send me back here.โ
Janessaโs grip tightened on her phone. Something is definitely wrong with Madelyn. More time with Sebastianโthatโs the last thing I want.
Her gaze hardened. โOf course. You misunderstood. I called to tell you about the class reunion tomorrow; Christopher will be there.โ
Madelyn scoffed inwardly. Janessa is nervous. If I remember correctly, she set me up after a few drinks at the alumni gathering. I ended up in a hotel room with Christopher; Sebastian caught us. The Thorntons and Lockharts became involved; the elders intervened.
Sheโs trying the same trick again, huh? she thought. The old Madelyn is gone. Iโll play along.
