Chapter 345: Nothing Short of Imprisonment
She added, her tone resolute, โNightingale has been loyal to me for so long. I wonโt just let him become a vegetable.โ She then turned her gaze toward Madelyn. โThis is why I sought you out.โ
โHuh? Me?โ Madelyn was completely taken aback. โIโm not a miracle doctor, nor do I possess any magical healing powers. What help could I possibly offer?โ
Hence, she evasively replied, โItโs not that I donโt want to help you. Thereโs nothing I can do about this situation. Shouldnโt you be seeking a doctor for such an odd issue? Itโs pointless to seek my help, donโt you think?โ
Morgana shook her head. โNo, you are useful.โ Madelyn became even more bewildered.
At that moment, the doctor nervously voiced, โMiss, youโre too naive. If medical skills alone could cure everything, there wouldnโt be a disease in this world that I couldnโt treat. In reality, the substance in Nightingaleโs system, while euphemistically referred to as a hypnotic, is actually a slow-acting poison. Without the corresponding antidote, there is simply no chance of recovery. Moreover, the human body has a memory function. If he doesnโt get up and move around for a long time, and his body gets used to this state, over time, he could eventually become bedridden. By now, Nightingale has been in a deep sleep for over two months. Iโm concerned that if we canโt find an antidote this month, he might never wake up again.โ The doctor stated helplessly.
Hearing that, Madelyn couldnโt help but exclaim, โWhat on earth is this poison? It sounds scary.โ
Morgana chimed in, โIf we knew what it is, things would have been easier to handle. However, itโs precisely because we have no idea who those people are that weโre powerless against them. According to our investigations, theyโre extremely elusive, and we canโt find any clues. They could very well be some sort of metahuman.โ
Once she finished speaking, Morgana looked at Madelyn with confidence. โIโve heard that you are quite talented, and weโve all witnessed your abilities firsthand. Thatโs why I thought of enlisting your help. What do you think?โ
Madelyn was utterly dumbfounded. Seriously? There are actually matters that even the Oceanic Empire canโt uncover? They need my help?
Madelyn quickly rejected the idea. โIโm sorry, Ms. Morgana. This is just too absurd. I donโt think I can be of any help.โ
โDonโt you have supernatural abilities?โ Morgana seemed somewhat displeased upon hearing her refusal.
Frustrated, Madelyn regretted her actions. Had I known that one small lie would lead to this, I would never have lied. But of course, itโs too late for regrets now.
Madelyn bit the bullet and explained equivocally. โWell, I do have some superpowers, but as Iโve mentioned before, itโs unpredictable. It works sometimes, and other times it doesnโt. I simply have no control over it.โ
Madelyn wanted to continue declining, but the three one-eyed men standing behind Morgana became annoyed and threatened her. โMiss, if you give it a shot, whether it works or not, at least weโll know the outcome. But if you give up right away, Iโll send you to your death!โ
Madelyn was rendered speechless. Morganaโs too despicable! She said she wouldnโt harm me, but theyโre threatening to send me to my death! What a liar!
Morgana chuckled. โSince you said your superpowers are unstable, I can wait. They should work at least once within this month, right?โ
Madelyn was befuddled, as though her mind had stopped working. It seemed as though Madelynโs entire mind had disconnected. What does she mean? Is she going to lock me up here? This is nothing short of imprisonment! Plus, wonโt I have to die if I canโt figure anything out within a month?
โMs. Morganaโฆ may I reconsider?โ Madelyn pleaded, distressed.
Phantom tugged at her sleeve, signaling her to stop talking. Even though Morgana wore a mask that concealed her emotions, those who had been with her for a long time understood that she hated being turned down repeatedly.
Sure enough, a hint of anger crept into Morganaโs tone. โYoung lady, I remember you promising me earlier that you would help if you could. Are you going back on your word now?โ
โOf course not!โ Madelyn stuttered helplessly. โWhy would I not want to help you? Itโs just that I donโt trust in my own capabilities, thatโs all.โ
Morgana chuckled. โItโs okay if you donโt believe in yourself because I believe in you. I know you can do it.โ The threatening undertone was evident in her voice, implying that failure was not an option.
Madelyn couldnโt help but frown, feeling a bit annoyed. However, she didnโt say anything more. After all, what was destined to happen would happen. Besides, she was well aware that she couldnโt go against Morgana, so any form of resistance would be pointless.
Thus, she closed her eyes to try and recall the events of her previous life. Scenes from the past flickered through her mind, playing as if on rewind. However, no matter how hard Madelyn searched through her memories, she couldnโt find any recollection of this matter.
After much effort in combing through her memories, she was plagued by a throbbing headache and could only say, โIโm sorry, I might not be able to make any headway if you leave me to figure this out on my own. I might be able to give it a shot if you can provide me with more information.โ Her words implied that she was compromising.
Knowing Madelyn was willing to help, Morgana smiled. โAll right then. Since thatโs the case, you should stay here for now. Of course, take your time. You can stay here for the entire month to think it over, and you donโt have to worry about anything else. Iโll have someone arrange your accommodations to ensure you have the best living conditions. As for your family, Iโll send someone to take care of them as well.โ
She paused before adding, โHowever, my patience has its limits. I hope youโll give me satisfactory results after all the care and luxuries Iโve provided you.โ With that, her red lips curled into a smile before she left with the one-eyed men.
