Chapter 36: You Simply Prefer Another Man

Sebastian, dressed in a black trench coat, exuded a somewhat dark allure. In truth, he had initially planned to spend the night at the office, but he found himself unable to fall asleep, no matter what. Whenever Sebastian thought of Madelyn leaving in the heavy rain that evening, he couldnโ€™t help but feel a sense of unease in his heart. In the end, he couldnโ€™t resist driving back in the middle of the night.

After entering the house, Sebastian handed his umbrella to a housekeeper before heading upstairs. At that moment, Lydia was hastily rushing down. Her expression indicated that something serious had happened! Sebastian couldnโ€™t help but furrow his brows, stopping Lydia to ask, โ€œWhat happened?โ€

In a hushed tone, Lydia exclaimed, โ€œMr. Lockhart, thank goodness youโ€™re back! Mrs. Lockhart returned home drenched from the rain this evening, and now she has a high fever. I am just about to go get a doctor!โ€ After speaking, Lydia hurried towards the living room, wanting to make an emergency call.

โ€œRunning a feverโ€ฆโ€ Upon hearing her words, a sense of urgency gripped Sebastian. He immediately dashed up the stairs. Upon entering the room, Sebastian noticed that Madelynโ€™s face had turned an unusually deep shade of red. Beyond this, she was drenched in sweat, and her expression was rather uneasy. It was as if she was trapped in a terrifying nightmare.

โ€œMadelyn! Madelyn!โ€ Sebastian pushed her twice, only to suddenly realize that despite her raging fever, her body was drenched in cold sweat. She canโ€™t go on like this! And so, without hesitation, Sebastian immediately scooped Madelyn up, then swiftly made his way downstairs.

At that moment, Lydia hurried over, and it was just in time for Sebastian to instruct, โ€œLydia, come with me to the hospital!โ€ Then, the two hurriedly got into the car. Even though it was raining, Sebastian was anxious, causing him to drive at an extremely high speed. Lydia sat in the car, but she was unable to clearly see the road outside. Her heart was filled with worry.

โ€œMr. Lockhart, please slow down a bit. Mrs. Lockhart has a fever; we canโ€™t afford any mishaps!โ€ Sebastian, however, seemed oblivious to the warnings, continuing his wild ride on the road. Fortunately, they successfully arrived at the hospital in less than five minutes.

After getting out of the car, Sebastian rushed Madelyn straight into the emergency room. The nurses on duty immediately sprang into action, initiating a series of life-saving procedures. In a frantic rush, they administered a fever reducer injection to Madelyn, but her condition showed no signs of improvement. Seeing that, the doctor had no choice but to administer another sedative. This time, Madelyn finally began to calm down gradually.

An hour later, Madelynโ€™s fever had finally subsided, and her expression calmed down too. Sebastian and Lydia were watching from the side, and it was only at this moment that they finally breathed a sigh of relief.

However, as Sebastian looked at Madelyn on the bed, he couldnโ€™t help but feel a pang of heartache. More than that, he was filled with self-reproach. None of this would have happened had he asked Malcolm to keep Madelyn back then. But he didnโ€™tโ€ฆ

The day was gradually dawning. Madelyn woke up slowly, opening her eyes to see a pristine white ceiling above. She was wondering where she was when she slightly turned her head and saw Sebastian sound asleep on the couch. The sunlight from the window streamed in, falling perfectly onto his refined features, making him appear incredibly serene and gentle. Everything had transformed into a picturesque scene. As Madelyn gazed at him, she couldnโ€™t help but let a slight smile grace her lips.

Then, she wanted to get up, but as soon as she exerted a slight effort, her body was overcome with fatigue and aching pain. Madelyn couldnโ€™t help but let out a soft gasp, which ended up waking Sebastian.

Seeing her awake, Sebastian felt an unexpected surge of nervousness. He approached her, unable to contain his concern, and asked, โ€œAre you awake? How are you feeling now? Are you still in discomfort?โ€ This was the first time Madelyn saw him like this, so she found it somewhat hard to adjust.

She then whispered softly, โ€œIโ€™m fine. Just feeling a bit weak. Sebastian, could you help me sit up?โ€ Sebastian felt a little guilt in his heart, so naturally, he didnโ€™t refuse. With both hands on her shoulders, he gently helped her to sit up.

At that moment, Madelyn simply laid back unexpectedly, effortlessly finding herself nestled in his arms. In an instant, Sebastianโ€™s entire body stiffened. Then, Madelyn looked up innocently at his face. He looked so handsome it could incite jealousy from both ethereal beings and men. She teased, โ€œOh, why arenโ€™t you avoiding me anymore?โ€

Sebastian was taken aback, but the look in Madelynโ€™s eyes was piercing, as if she had clearly seen through everything. A womanโ€™s intuition has always been mysteriously accurate. During this period, Sebastian had been deliberately avoiding her. How could Madelyn possibly not notice? Since he chose to hide, she was all the more determined to confront him!

Seeing Madelyn in this state, Sebastian knew that she had almost regained her spirits, and suddenly returned to his aloof demeanor. โ€œSince youโ€™re still not well, you should lie down and rest properly,โ€ Sebastian said while pushing her away without any hesitation. Then, he turned around to leave.

Once again, he was about to leave without explaining anything. Madelyn couldnโ€™t help but feel a surge of anger, and impulsively, she reached out and firmly grabbed hold of him. โ€œSebastian, can we clear the air between us? Even till today, I still donโ€™t understand why youโ€™re upset with me. What exactly did I do wrong?โ€

Madelyn looked at him, persistent and unyielding. โ€œPlease tell me if Iโ€™ve truly done something wrong. I can change, but donโ€™tโ€ฆโ€

Sebastian suddenly let out a bitter laugh as he looked at Madelynโ€™s expression. He forcefully pulled away from her grasp, and gently said, โ€œThereโ€™s no need for this. Actually, you havenโ€™t done anything wrong. You are just fond of someone else.โ€

The following sentence was too cruel; Sebastian couldnโ€™t say it. Yet, it was undeniable. What is wrong with her liking someone else? She had simply given her deep affection to a man named Christopher. Just like himself, he had given every part of his heart to another woman.

Subsequently, Sebastian reverted back to his aloof demeanor, his face void of any expression. He said, โ€œYou should rest here. I will have Lydia come over to take care of you.โ€ Having said that, he turned around without any hesitation and left.

Madelyn watched as he walked away, wanting to hold him back, but she felt utterly helpless. In the end, a profound sense of defeat welled up within her. Why have I messed everything up again? What on earth is Sebastian thinking? Why canโ€™t I decipher his thoughts at allโ€ฆ?

Not long after Sebastian left, Lydia arrived. When she came, she brought along some light, simple food. After having a light meal and satisfying her hunger, Madelyn didnโ€™t want to stay in the hospital any longer. Thus, she requested to be discharged.

Upon hearing this, Lydia still expressed her concern, โ€œMrs. Lockhart, your health isnโ€™t at its best yet. Perhaps you should consider staying a few more days?โ€ Madelyn shook her head. โ€œThis place is too stifling. I think Iโ€™ll just go home.โ€

Reluctantly, Lydia nodded and then went to ask the doctor if she could be discharged. After a thorough examination of Madelyn, the doctor confirmed that she was in good health and gave his approval for discharge. Following that, Madelyn completed the hospital discharge procedures and went home.

Madelyn didnโ€™t go to school that day because of the severe fever that left her feeling weak all over. What she didnโ€™t know was that the school was already in complete chaos.
