Chapter 6: His Type

Madelyn was well aware of Janessa's plotting. Pushing Janessa's arm away, she chuckled, "That's okay. I'll sit with the class representative." Janessa arched an eyebrow, wanting to stop Madelyn, but Madelyn had already turned and walked away.

Madelyn sat across from the class representative, an honest, mild-mannered man in gold-rimmed glasses. He seemed gentlemanly. Madelyn recalled his good grades, mirroring her own academic success. They quickly struck up a conversation.

In the corner of the private room, Christopher felt displeased by Madelyn's lack of attention, though he couldn't explain why. Previously, he hadn't cared for Madelyn. Despite her stunning beauty, her unique, avant-garde taste and peculiar attire had always been off-putting. He preferred sensual, alluring women. That night, however, he saw a different side of Madelynโ€”a potential seductress capable of abandoning her unusual style. She's so my type! he thought.

Seemingly sensing his displeasure, Janessa approached and comforted him, "Don't worry. Maybe Madelyn's just playing hard to get! She used to be so infatuated with you. Of course she'd want to be close to you."

Christopher found her words reassuring. Meanwhile, Janessa harbored suspicions about Madelyn's sudden change and secretly observed her every move.

Madelyn felt a piercing gaze and knew, without turning, who it was. Janessa was the cause of Madelyn's past difficulties, and Madelyn couldn't bring herself to be friendly. However, it wasn't the time to fall out with Janessa, so Madelyn played along.

Approaching Janessa with a champagne glass, Madelyn said, "Janessa, I'm so bored. Do you have any fun ideas?"

Janessa, relieved, said cheerfully, "Of course! We must enjoy some drinks at such a grand event! Madelyn, as your friend, let me toast you!"

Madelyn chuckled and accepted. Janessa said, "Madelyn, seeing Sebastian's icy face every day must be hard on you. So, let's drown all your troubles in wine tonight and let loose."

"All right then," Madelyn agreed, quickly downing a glass. Janessa immediately refilled it.

Madelyn knew her low alcohol tolerance and had taken a sobering pill beforehand, allowing herself to drink. After three rounds, a flush appeared on her face. She rubbed her temples, slurring, "Iโ€ฆ I can't drink anymoreโ€ฆ I feel so dizzy. I need to go to the restroom."

Janessa chuckled, feigning concern, "Oh, I'll go with you."

"T-That's okay. I can manage," Madelyn declined, staggering.

Janessa's gaze darkened as she finished her wine. Approaching Christopher, she handed him a keycard. "Mr. Gale, I hate to impose, but Madelyn has had a bit too much to drink and just left. Could you possibly help get her to the hotel room upstairs? Here's the keycard."

Christopher readily accepted. Madelyn's attire that night had captivated him. He immediately gave chase, but found no sign of her. He ventured down another corridor.

Janessa quickly texted Sebastian: Mr. Lockhart, Madelyn and I attended a class reunion. Madelyn had too much to drink, and Christopher escorted her back to her room. I'm not sure what might happen nextโ€ฆ

Sebastian had just left a Lockhart Group meeting, exhausted and without time to check his phone. A wave of irritation washed over him as he unlocked his phone and saw a photo Madelyn had sentโ€”she was in a light purple dress, smiling radiantly. He seldom saw her like this. Then, Janessa's text arrived, and his expression turned grim.
