Chapter 5: Never Let Him Down
The following afternoon, Madelyn opened her walk-in closet, intending to choose an outfit for the class reunion dinner. She was stunned. The closet overflowed with haute couture, all imported. Sebastian had commissioned it. In her previous life, she hadn't appreciated his efforts, ignoring these exquisite garments. Only now did she realize they were all her favorite styles, incredibly flattering.
Knocks sounded. Lydia arrived with snacks. Noticing Madelyn choosing clothes, she smiled; she sensed a change. Madelyn asked, "Lydia, did Sebastian send these clothes?"
Lydia chuckled, fond of Madelyn and sensing her newfound amiability. "Yes. Mr. Lockhart personally selected them. He didn't want me to tell you, fearing you might dislike them. But I think you know his feelings," she laughed softly.
Madelyn sighed inwardly. It's just as I expected. I was foolish, mistaking pretense for sincerity, pushing away someone who cared. Such a wonderful man... How could I have missed it? Luckily, I've returned. I won't miss out again. I will never let him down.
After careful consideration, Madelyn chose an elegant dress. Holding it up, she asked Lydia, "What do you think? Is it nice?"
"With your stunning face, you'd look beautiful in anything," Lydia smiled.
"You flatter me," Madelyn blushed.
Lydia opened a wardrobe. "Mrs. Lockhart, there are matching heels, handbags, and jewelry. Feel free to choose." She eagerly presented several jewelry boxes.
"Thank you, Lydia," Madelyn said gratefully.
"Mr. Lockhart will be delighted," Lydia responded brightly.
Madelyn slipped into the light purple dress, admiring her reflection. Handing her phone to Lydia, she smiled charmingly. "Could you take a full-body picture, please?"
Madelyn struck a graceful pose, her captivating eyes radiating allure. She immediately sent the picture to Sebastian, texting: How do I look? She waited, assuming he was busy.
Janessa called. "Madelyn, are you getting ready? It's just a reunion. No need to dress up. Just wear your usual attire. Arrive on time."
Madelyn listened silently, then hung up. She said the same thing in my previous life. Then she stole the spotlight, while I looked dull. Today, I won't listen.
Madelyn drove Sebastian's Porsche to the exclusive club. Upstairs, in a private room, people clinked glasses. As Madelyn entered, all eyes turned to her, awestruck.
Her classmates didn't recognize her, guessing her identity. With a faint smile, she said, "I apologize for being late."
"Is that you, Madelyn? You look absolutely stunning!" someone exclaimed.
Everyone was astonished. Madelyn had previously been unkempt and eccentrically dressed. Now, she was breathtaking in her lilac gown, its delicate hue accentuating her flawless figure. Her elegance captivated everyone.
Among the admiring gazes, one stood outโJanessa's jealous stare. Janessa, in her own expensive dress, had been enjoying the compliments, but Madelyn had instantly eclipsed her.
The room buzzed with praise. Even Janessa's original admirers flocked to Madelyn. Compliments poured in about her dress and appearance.
Madelyn smiled and took a sip of champagne. I must have been crazy to believe Janessa.
She remembered Janessa's advice to dress according to Christopher's unconventional tastesโheavy metal attireโa deceptive scheme.
Madelyn saw Christopher, his admiration evident. Janessa approached, frowning. "Why are you dressed like this? It's too formal."
Madelyn smiled. "Didn't you tell me to dress simply? Heavy metal is such a hassle."
Janessa awkwardly laughed. "No, that's not what I meant. You look great. I've been waiting for you. Come, I saved you a seat."
Madelyn noticed the empty seat next to Christopher.
