"Grandpa..."
Arnold could not accept it. He had spent his entire life preparing to be the family heir. Mike, however, had devoted his time to his daughter, and Arnold didn't understand why Mike was now in charge.
Mike gave a sarcastic laugh. "I have no interest in taking over this broken family!"
"You have to!" Mr. Lawson Senior dropped the bait. "Aren't you looking for Sandra's mother? You'll have all the resources you need if you take over the Lawson family. Wouldn't it be easier to find her then?" Mike remained silent. He had to admit the offer was tempting, if only for Sandra's sake.
"Fine. I'll take over the family."
Hearing his desired answer, Mr. Lawson Senior nodded in satisfaction, a faint smile playing on his lips as he closed his eyes. The cardiac monitor beside the bed emitted a sharp, piercing beep. The line went flat.
Felicia woke in Stephan's arms as they drove back. Her body felt feverish, her thoughts a whirlwind. She clung to Stephan, whose body felt cool compared to hers. She craved relief from the heat. Her touch sent Stephan reeling. He longed to hold her hands, but feared reopening her wounds. He was deeply concerned, a stark contrast to Felicia's unconcern. Stephan's face darkened, his breathing ragged. Simon, driving, avoided looking back and accelerated toward the estate. Simon quickly opened the rear passenger door. "Mr. Russell, we're here." Stephan carried Felicia upstairs.
In the bedroom, Felicia's boldness intensified, making Stephan clench his jaw. "Felicia, do you even know who I am?" He worried her aggressiveness stemmed from mistaking him for someone else.
Felicia, looking sad, cupped his face. "Stephan! You're Stephan Russell! I'm not dumb. Why would I get it wrong..."
He was satisfied. Felicia began to cry. "I feel awful..."
Stephan's gaze darkened, his voice deep and steady. Despite her pleas, he remained calm, finally asking in a soothing tone, "Do you want me to help?"
Felicia, frustrated, nodded. "Yes, please!" "Alright," Stephan replied, his voice deep. "Don't regret it."
It was a sleepless night for both of them.
The next morning, Felicia opened her eyes to the unfamiliar yet familiar ceiling. Memories returned gradually as she blinked. She'd been taken to the Lawson residence, then escaped, and Stephan had rescued her. Then, the wild, entangled memories flooded back, vivid and lingering. Felicia shifted, feeling sore. As she questioned her life choices, she heard a man's voice near her ear. "You're awake?"
