Dexter had given up the struggle. He allowed the company to go bankrupt, feeling any further effort would be futile. Kayla, however, still clung to a glimmer of hope. Despite the mounting criticism, she believed a solution existed. She viewed this as just another storm for the Fullers, a familiar challenge they would weather. But her optimism was about to shatter.
Kayla clutched Dexter's hand, crying, "Dad, are we really going bankrupt? Can't you think of anything? Please, think of something!"
Dexter smiled bitterly. "Kayla, there's much I haven't told you. The business world isn't as simple as you think."
The truth was, previous rumors had severely weakened the Fullers. Their assets shrank, market value plummeted, and internal conflicts arose. The company was like a building with a destroyed foundationโseemingly intact, yet structurally unsound, poised for collapse. One final push would bring the entire enterprise crashing down.
Kayla refused to believe it, urging, "Dad, let's ask Mr. Sully for help! He's always been close to you, and he sends me birthday gifts. He'll help us!"
Dexter sighed. He'd wanted to shield his daughter's innocence, but the harsh reality demanded honesty. "Kayla, Mr. Sully is one of our biggest rivals. It's not just him; those businessmen and friends you've met are also exploiting this situation. They've coveted my business for years. Now that the opportunity's arisen, who would pass it up?"
Even if they didn't take over, someone else would. And if everyone else was taking a share, why wouldn't they? Honestly, if another family were in the Fullers' position, Dexter would have made the same decision. That's simply how it was.
Myra forced a smile. "Alright, don't be so pessimistic. Nobody knows what will happen next. Maybe there's still a way out."
Kayla quickly nodded. "Yes! Mina's death has nothing to do with our family. Won't we be cleared of suspicion once the truth is revealed?"
Dexter remained less optimistic. This crisis wasn't caused by Mina. Regardless of how she died or who killed her, the blame would fall on the Fullers. Someone wanted to silence them permanently.
Dexter stumbled.
"Sit down," Myra urged.
She and Kayla helped him to the couch. Myra wanted to call for the maids but remembered most had been dismissed. The two remaining were busy in the kitchen.
She turned to Kayla. "Go pour your dad a glass of water."
"Okay," Kayla replied, leaving the room.
Myra patted Dexter's back, helping him catch his breath. But Felicia's words raced through her mind: "And one more thing. If you've stolen something, it's best to return it immediately. Then you might still have a chance to survive."
What did Felicia know? Why did she say the Fullers stole something? Could this be orchestrated by someone behind the scenes? And how did Felicia know?
Questions flooded Myra's mind. She wanted to ask Felicia, but Felicia had slammed the door in her face, leaving Myra frustrated.
That ungrateful child! Myra cursed under her breath. After considering this, she turned to Dexter and asked, "Darling, have weโฆ ever taken something that didn't belong to us?"
