Chapter 607
It seemed like a ridiculous soap opera. Here was Archie, having an affair, yet responding to Imogen with a calm voice, carefully dispelling her doubts and suspicions. How long had this been going on? How many times had this charade played out? Imogen didnโt dare to think about it. Even the slightest recollection of past details would cause everything she had found suspicious, yet ignored, to resurface, piecing together into a terrifying web that left her suffocating.
No wonder Johanna had stopped referring to Imogen as her sister-in-law. No wonder Johanna always trailed Archie. No wonder Imogen often heard faint rustling sounds. It turned out she had become part of their twisted game. How laughable. Imogen wanted to laugh aloud. To think Archie and Johanna found their affair so thrilling, they even turned it into a game in front of her! Meanwhile, she had been a fool, trapped in a web of lies, treating them as cherished loved ones, only to be betrayed! Wonderful. Just wonderful!
Imogen took a deep breath and suppressed her emotions. She buried everything deep within and pretended nothing had happened. Although Archie and Johanna acted shamelessly, they quickly separated; there were more important matters to attend to. Archie approached Imogen, his tone gentle and caring. โDarling, you stayed up all night. Have you eaten anything?โ
Imogen sneered inwardly. Thankfully, she hadnโt eaten; otherwise, she might have vomited.
โIโll get you something.โ Soon, Archie returned with a cart of foodโsix dishes, all tailored to Imogenโs preferences. In the past, Imogen would have been touched; now, all she felt was hypocrisy and disgust.
Imogen knocked over the steaming bowl of chowder. Archie jumped back from the burn. Before he could speak, Imogen exclaimed innocently, โOh dear! Archie, I didnโt mean it. Youโre not mad at me, are you?โ
โOf course not. Iโll just rinse it with some cold water,โ he said, his furrowed brows betraying his irritation, though his voice remained calm.
Johanna couldnโt contain herself. โImogen, whatโs wrong with you? That chowder was boiling hot! Canโt you be more careful? Look, it burned him!โ
Imogen looked pained. โWell, what can I do? Iโm just a blind woman who canโt see anythingโJohanna, are you mad at me?โ
Johanna was about to retort when Archie stopped her, signaling her not to cause a scene. They had important things to do. Johanna shut her mouth, then latched onto Imogenโs arm and pouted. โOh, Imogen, how could I ever be mad at you? I was just worried youโd hurt yourself.โ
โI see,โ Imogen replied flatly, silently watching their interaction coldly. After finishing the meal, Imogen casually instructed Johanna to clear the table.
