Scarlet weighed her options and realized the best course was to tell the truth. She could easily handle Maurice's rage if she simply repeated Felicia's speculations. But she didn't.
Instead, she smiled, mischief blossoming in her expression. She said slowly, "Unless my boss gives the go-ahead, I can't just spout nonsense. Besides, just because someone is a suspect doesn't mean they're the culprit. My boss would never approve of handling things your way."
Scarlet's words struck a nerve. "Mr. Glovers, you and my boss are not the same kind of people, wouldn't you agree?" Maurice retorted, his face falling. His finger twitched, the safety clicked off, the gun settling on the trigger.
Just then, aโ
And the one who moved it? Felicia herself. She was awake, her face ashen, her lips colorless. Weakness forced her to lean against the car for support. The moment the gun turned toward her forehead, Maurice's expression shifted.
Felicia laughed. "Go on, aim at me. But don't you fuck with my people!"
Maurice immediately yanked the gun away, clicked the safety back on, and tossed it aside. He shouted, "Are you insane? What if it misfired?"
"Then I guess I'd be out of luck," Felicia replied, her voice weak but her attitude sharp.
Maurice was beyond furious. If it were anyone else, he would have dealt with them long ago. But this was Felicia. All he could do was turn...
"Fuck!" he swore under his breath. He locked eyes with Felicia and gritted out, "You're just banking on the fact that I can't bring myself to hurt you! You're going to drive me toโ"
"Lunatic," Felicia thought, shooting him a disgusted look.
Ignoring his outburst, she raised her hand at Scarlet. Without hesitation, Scarlet stepped forward to support her.
"We're leaving," Felicia said.
They were about to go. Scarlet opened her car door, ready to help Felicia inside. But Maurice was behind them in an instant, grabbing Felicia's wrist. He asked, "Were you poisoned? Or did someone plant a venomous creature in you?"
Felicia was surprised, and her expression betrayed her. A single second was enough for Maurice to catch on.
"I knew it," he said, his eyes narrowing dangerously.
Felicia thought he was here to add insult to injury. After all, she had once planted venomous creatures on him, tormenting him for ages. Now, the tables had turned.
Given Maurice's vengeful nature, it would be more surprising if he didn't seize this opportunity for revenge.
She quirked a brow. "Yes. I was ambushed. Consider it karma. Happy?"
But Maurice's words caught her completely off guard. He said, "You'll be fine. I'll find a way!"
