Felicia mercilessly chastised Mankeโs lieutenant. โI wouldn't have done the same for anyone else. And Maurice, don't be grateful for the curries you made for me. You and I, and Felicia's blushes, were enough to tolerate any lingering sentiment.โ
His smile froze. His gaze sharpened, locking onto Feliciaโs face. For a moment, his expression was laced with frustration, but in the end, only resignation remained. โDid you have to?โ
Felicia shrugged. โI was just speaking the truth.โ
He was speechless. He lowered his eyes, concealing the turmoil within. The midday haze made his tall figure seem lonely and desolate.
To be fair, Maurice was handsome. His sharp features were striking, yet tinged with an unnatural allure. When arrogant, he possessed an intimidating air. But now, he looked defeated.
She packed up her needle kit, not sparing him another glance. โAlright, get some rest. We set sail first thing in the morning.โ With that, she turned to leave.
Maurice finally spoke, his voice barely above a whisper. Felicia might not have even heard him. โYou donโt need to be grateful. And I donโt need your pity. I justโฆ didnโt want you to get hurt. Thatโs all.โ
A gust of wind blew in from the window, scattering his words into the air. He wasnโt so eloquent. โI did this of my own will. From the very start, I never expectedโฆโ
Felicia paused. But before she could respond, Maurice had already closed his eyes, exhaustion spreading over his face as he lay back down. She said nothing and left.
Mauriceโs men were standing guard outside. Seeing Felicia emerge, they immediately straightened and asked cautiously, โMs. Fuller, how is Mr. Glover?โ
โHeโs fine for now, but the venomous creature still took its toll on him. Just keep an eye on him, and donโt disturb him unless necessary,โ Felicia instructed. She added, โWeโre setting sail early tomorrow morning. Youโre all aware of that, right?โ
โYes, Scarlet already informed us this afternoon,โ one of them quickly replied. Felicia nodded.
Since Mauriceโs men were staying on the floor, she and Scarlet werenโt planning to leave either. Felicia chose an empty suite, and Scarlet arrived with a bag of food not long after.
โBoss, Iโve loaded everything you asked for into the car. And hereโs your late-night snack. Want to try it?โ She set the takeout boxes on the small dining table.
Felicia glanced at the spread and found that everything was to her liking. She teased, โYouโve memorized my tastes pretty well. I might not be able to function without you around.โ
Scarlet quirked a brow and grinned. โWell, since youโre rich, why donโt you just keep hiring me? Iโll even cut you a deal.โ
Felicia washed her hands and took a seat before eating the steak. โI guess thatโs better than having you cut me.โ
