Chapter 119

In the study, Gabrielโ€™s expression was grim. โ€œDad, have you ever wondered why we treat Abigail this way? What parents donโ€™t love their daughter?โ€

โ€œYou framed Stephen and sent him to prison in your place,โ€ Wyatt shot back with contempt. โ€œI donโ€™t see much love for your kids there either.โ€

Gabrielโ€™s lips tightened at the barb. He suppressed his rising anger and continued, โ€œLook, we have our reasons for treating her like this. But what you did to Dani todayโ€”you really broke her heart.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t give me that crap. Whatโ€™s the deal? Were those test results from back then fake? If they were fake, then show me proof. And whatโ€™s so hard about getting new tests done?โ€ Wyatt stared him down.

โ€œWe already ran tests before. It was because of those tests that weโ€“โ€

Wyatt cut him off impatiently. โ€œI want to see you go to the hospital with my own eyes. I want the results right there on the spot!โ€

โ€œAre you saying someone falsified the results?โ€ Gabrielโ€™s anger cooled, and his voice became calmer.

Wyatt didnโ€™t answer. He just turned and walked out.

After her shower, Abigail lay in bed and sent Sebastian a message.

Abigail: [Thank you for everything with Grandpa.]

She hit send and stared up at the ceiling, thinking about the conversation between Gabriel and Wyatt. She was starting to piece things together.

All her feelings of being unwelcome suddenly made sense. โ€˜Am I going to lose Grandpaโ€™s approval right after I finally got it?โ€™ Abigail wondered.

Abigail didnโ€™t really care how the rest of the Gibson family treated her, but if Wyatt started taking Daniellaโ€™s side too, she knew it would really hurt.

The next day, Abigail woke up to find the housekeeper had already brought her clothes. She got dressed and left her room, only to run straight into Christian in the hallway.

Christian looked her up and down in his pajamas, his voice dripping with sarcasm. โ€œSleep well in Daniโ€™s room? Here I thought you had some backbone, but it turns out you only ran away over a bedroom.โ€

Abigail was about to snap back when Stephen came out of another room. โ€œChris, Dani took her room and turned it into a walk-in closet. Now itโ€™s back where it belongs. Whatโ€™s the problem?โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong with you?โ€ Christian had bailed him out of lockup late last night, and instead of being grateful, Stephen was now siding with Abigail against Daniella.

Stephen shrugged. โ€œIโ€™m just being fair. Is that a problem?โ€

โ€œStevie, you know who grew up with us. Sheโ€™s the one whoโ€“โ€

โ€œEnough. Just because we grew up together doesnโ€™t mean we get to gang up on the new kid. If we canโ€™t handle having her here, then we shouldnโ€™t have brought her back. But if sheโ€™s family, why are we all bullying her?โ€

After Stephen finished speaking, he looked at Abigail standing in the doorway and snapped, โ€œWhat are you standing there for? Get downstairs and eat breakfast.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t need you telling me what to do.โ€ Abigailโ€™s face was cold as she walked right past Christian.

โ€œIf you had any shame, youโ€™d give her room back,โ€ Christian watched her profile and spat out, furthering the warring in character.

Abigail glanced at him with complete indifference. โ€œTake it up with Grandpa.โ€

Stephen saw Christian about to say more and quickly stepped in, grabbing Abigailโ€™s hand. โ€œWhy waste your breath on someone who wonโ€™t listen to reason? He steals your stuff and acts like heโ€™s in the right!โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re just as bad.โ€ Abigail pulled her hand free and headed for the stairs.

โ€œKiss ass all you want. It doesnโ€™t mean anyoneโ€™s gonna appreciate it!โ€ Christian threw the taunt over his shoulder as he walked toward his room.

โ€œMind your own business,โ€ Stephen shot back, then hurried to catch up with Abigail.

Abigail had no intention of eating breakfast at Gibson Villa.

Stephen followed behind her, his tone almost sheepish. โ€œYouโ€™re really gonna leave without eating anything?โ€

Abigail turned to face him, her eyes full of disgust. โ€œWhatโ€™s gotten into you? That time at the detention centerโ€“Ralph sent me there. Donโ€™t think I went to see you.โ€

Stephenโ€™s sudden change didnโ€™t make her feel better. He used to be just like Christian, and now this complete turnaround actually made her sick.

โ€œI donโ€™t think so. Letโ€™s have breakfast first, then Iโ€™ll drive you to the office.โ€ Stephen didnโ€™t want to explain himself. All the explanations in the world couldnโ€™t undo the real damage theyโ€™d done to Abigail before.

โ€œNo thanks. Just stay away from me.โ€ Abigail backed away from him and walked quickly toward the gate.

โ€œAbby, I was blind before. I hurt you badly. Just give me one chance. I promise Iโ€™ll only be good to you from now on.โ€ Stephen stepped forward to block her path, his voice completely sincere.
