Chapter 196
After the colleague’s birthday party, Abigail called James.
Waiting outside the club, she soon saw his car pull up.
When she opened the back door, she realized Sebastian was inside too.
“Aren’t we heading to your place?” she asked, sliding into the seat.
“Haven’t had dinner yet. Thought we’d grab a bite first,” Sebastian replied calmly.
“How are you doing today?” Abigail asked with a hint of concern once she settled in.
Sebastian turned to look at her, slipping back into his usual laid-back manner. “For people, life and death are normal. Same with cats. By the way, did your little ‘showdown’ with the Gibson family get you anywhere?”
“Not really.” Abigail hadn’t found any evidence, but the incident had only made Daniella’s position in the family even worse.
“So you still can’t be sure if Daniella killed our cat.” Sebastian leaned back in his seat, voice neutral.
Abigail nodded, feeling a bit awkward. “I can’t check her bank statements. Stephen said he’d look into it, but he needs to go through the process.”
“Honestly, I don’t think it’ll help. She spends so much every day, big and small. How would we know which payment was for a drone?”
“You can’t confirm it, but you still went after her?” Sebastian asked.
Abigail was quiet for a moment before speaking. “It’s either her or Christian. But after confronting him, he seems too dumb. Even if he’s naive, he probably wouldn’t do something like this.”
James couldn’t help laughing. “Why do you think Christian’s stupid?”
“He just looks stupid. Like Stephen—both are clueless,” Abigail answered flatly.
In her opinion, if Gabriel hadn’t gotten Stephen imprisoned, making him realize the Gibson family’s problems, he’d still be as foolish as Christian, mindlessly defending Daniella.
“Ren told me your family ran new DNA tests. Turns out the old ones were rigged, and now they know you’re Gabriel’s real daughter, right?” James asked casually, keeping his eyes on the road.
“Right.” Abigail still didn’t feel much about the news. Not even a little happy.
“So, are you ready to think about what we discussed?” James said.
Abigail glanced at Sebastian. “Your take?”
“Don’t stress it. Now that the Gibson family accepts you, there’s no hurry. You need to watch Daniella. She’s lost her footing with them, so she’ll definitely plot an exit strategy—especially with that secret charge hanging over her head,” Sebastian replied.
Abigail remembered Gabriel’s words about sending Daniella to prison.
She said, “He said they’re reopening the case of that hit-and-run she was involved in.”
“The Gibson family plays rough,” James scoffed.
It didn’t matter if it was Abigail in the past or Daniella now. When their interests were at stake, they’d cut ties with anyone, no matter how long they’d cared for them.
James understood the family was turning against Daniella because of Abigail’s ties with Sebastian.
With Abigail in the picture, sacrificing Daniella was a small price for Gabriel to pay her back.
Abigail said in a low voice, “The moment I knew the result, there wasn’t a bit of happiness. Instead, there was disappointment and weariness and some disgust. Why am I family with them?”
She had once fantasized about what her parents were like. But she never thought they would be so disappointing.
All her fantasies about her parents were shattered because of Gabriel and Bianca. Even her expectations for a brother were gone.
“You can’t choose your parents,” James comforted her. “And let me tell you, in this world, half of the parents aren’t worthy of being parents. They can’t take on the responsibility of parents, and they don’t know what being a parent is for."
"Just because people around them got married, they followed suit. Just because people around them had children, they had children too.”
Hearing this, Abigail said softly, “If I become a parent, I will never be like that.”
Sebastian smiled and said, “If you become a parent, what will you do?”
“The first thing is to love them,” Abigail said softly.
Sebastian nodded. “Based on your tolerance for the kitten, I think you will definitely be a qualified mom.”
