Chapter 197

By now, they had pulled up to a restaurant. James parked in an empty spot and turned to Abigail. โ€œA client told me about this place. Even if you had dinner, you need to try it. Their food is incredible, seriously.โ€ Abigail had actually eaten a lot at the birthday party, but Jamesโ€™ words made her curious.

Inside, they found their reserved table. James ordered a pitcher of passion fruit juice for Abigail right away. She loved it and poured herself a glass as soon as it arrived. Sebastian and James ordered different drinks. Abigail sat next to Sebastian, with James across the table.

When the menu came, she looked at James. โ€œWhy donโ€™t you order? I donโ€™t know whatโ€™s good here.โ€ โ€œSpicy cod steak is a must-try dish,โ€ he said. โ€œTheir version is awesome. I guarantee youโ€™ll like it. Itโ€™s a signature dish here.โ€ โ€œOkay.โ€ Abigail nodded, looking quite agreeable.

As Sebastian poured his coffee, he said to Abigail, โ€œIโ€™m going abroad tomorrow. The previous contract isnโ€™t settled yet, and the client is pushing me.โ€ Abigail was confused for a moment, wondering why he was telling her this. After a while, she said, โ€œThen go ahead with peace of mind. Iโ€™ll take care of your cat this time.โ€ Sebastian was almost amused by her response. He had hoped Abigail would come with him. โ€˜Oh, well,โ€™ he thought. โ€œAll right,โ€ he said with a sigh. James was laughing hard. โ€˜Dating someone whoโ€™s slow to catch on is indeed quite tiring,โ€™ he thought.

Seeing that he wasnโ€™t satisfied with her answer, Abigail hesitated for a moment and then said, โ€œI canโ€™t help you with the contract abroad. Technically, you are only a little better than me.โ€ โ€œOnly a little better?โ€ Sebastian didnโ€™t agree with that. โ€œYeah, Iโ€™m younger. Iโ€™ll catch up to you sooner or later, so youโ€™re only a tiny bit better,โ€ Abigail said, confident in her skills. Sebastian propped his chin on his hand and turned to look at her, his eyes full of lazy amusement. โ€œAlright, then, how long do you think itโ€™ll take?โ€ โ€œTwo years tops. Once Iโ€™ve learned all I can at Halden Group, Iโ€™ll enroll in community college to study more advanced stuff,โ€ Abigail said.

James laughed, โ€œYou might need more time than that. Even if you ace the exams and get into a good program, community college is usually four years.โ€ โ€œTrue, but I can work while I study. Schoolโ€™s never been too hard for me.โ€ After all, getting into Vanguard University hadnโ€™t been a struggle. โ€œWhen your recordโ€™s cleared, apply for financial aid. Iโ€™ll also ask around. Maybe we can get you out of taking the entrance exams,โ€ Sebastian said. โ€œFinancial aid?โ€ Abigail had no idea she could get compensation after clearing her name. โ€œSure. I remember you worked on some government projects in prison. With your situation, they usually cut you some slack for college admissions.โ€ Sebastian spelled it out for her. James nodded in agreement. โ€œWith financial aid, three yearsโ€™ worth of backpay, and compensation for emotional distress, you should get about 200 thousand dollars. You might even qualify for a housing grant.โ€ While 200 thousand dollars wasnโ€™t a fortune for her these days, a place to live in Cobridge was definitely valuable. โ€œThereโ€™s compensation too?โ€ she muttered to herself. โ€œYep. But you canโ€™t start the application until Daniellaโ€™s been sentenced and you get the original acquittal document. So you need to keep a tight watch on herโ€”make sure she doesnโ€™t pull a runner,โ€ James said with a smile. Abigail sounded excited. โ€œOnce I have that acquittal, Iโ€™ll be completely cleared, right? Just like a normal person?โ€ โ€œExactly.โ€ Sebastian nodded, his eyes gentle.

โ€œThen I really need to keep an eye on Daniella,โ€ Abigail repeated softly. โ€œJames, I need you to take the lead on monitoring Daniella,โ€ Sebastian told him firmly. James jumped in immediately, โ€œFor sure. Not just me, Ralphโ€™s looking into this tooโ€ฆโ€ His voice died down under Sebastianโ€™s cold stare. He thought, โ€˜Right, Ralph was Abigailโ€™s first love. Bringing up that heโ€™s helping out would only stir up trouble for Sebastian.โ€™ โ€œHey, try this passion fruit juice. See if it tastes different from the stuff you usually drink. If itโ€™s too sour and not sweet enough, Iโ€™ll lodge a complaint.โ€ James quickly changed the subject while Abigail was still thinking about it. Abigail took a sip and nodded. โ€œItโ€™s plenty sweet. No need to complain. But I wonder how Ralphโ€™s investigation is going.โ€
