Chapter 144: Who Is the Fool?
Both nurses knew Jesse was a pop star. Even before they started working at the hospital, they had secretly admired him. On that day, they heard Jesse had come to visit his brother. This was constantly on their minds, and they hoped to find time to see him.
Unbeknownst to them, while working in a nearby ward, they heard Jesse’s cries for help and hurriedly rushed over.
Everyone was gossiping and disparaging Caleb. Only his attending physician, Zeke Lambros, stepped forward to inquire about his condition.
“Mr. Jenkins, how are you feeling?”
Caleb spoke in a nonchalant manner. “I’m okay, just a bit dizzy. I can’t get out of bed.”
Zeke nodded. “You just need to rest more. Now that you’ve just woken up, it’s crucial not to get upset. Otherwise, it could hinder your recovery.”
The sound of hurried footsteps grew closer. Upon seeing the number of people in the ward, Raquel felt somewhat bewildered. She glanced at Jesse, then shifted her gaze to Caleb. She might not know what happened, but one thing she saw with absolute clarity: Jesse had been bullied again.
She felt a surge of anger. “Caleb, when Jesse was sick, he thought of you every day. He had barely been discharged from the hospital when he rushed over from home to see you. Is this how you repay him?”
Caleb watched the spectacle with a cold gaze. “Raquel, he came to visit me, so what are you doing here?”
He certainly hadn’t forgotten that, before he was hit by the car, Raquel had falsely accused him of harming the maid and even falsely accused him of attempted rape.
“She had disparaged me without holding back, and now she has the audacity to come visit me? She is probably here with Jesse, trying to get me killed.”
Raquel’s gaze flickered momentarily before she said, “Of course, I came to visit you. We’ve all been worried about you at home. You’ve been unconscious for several days.”
Caleb wasn’t buying it. “Worried about me? You’re probably more concerned that I didn’t die.”
Raquel was exasperated. “Caleb, how could you say that? When you were at death’s door, it was me who saved you! I donated blood to you, leaving me weak and helpless. The accident resulted in both my hands being crushed by a car. Look at the bandages on my hands!”
News of her being targeted for revenge by Phillip initially spread within their circle. However, Ivan… this resulted in ordinary people having no opportunity to understand how her hands got injured. They didn’t know the full story, relying solely on the scant information provided by Raquel. They had imagined a whole drama of ingratitude and betrayal, causing them to cast a disdainful glance at Caleb.
However, Caleb disregarded their stares and sarcastically said, “Raquel, even though I don’t know who saved me, I’m certain it wasn’t you.”
Upon hearing these words, Raquel instantly found herself sinking to the ground, heartbroken. “Boo hoo… Everyone, tell me if this is fair. I went to great lengths to save him, only to have my efforts wasted. My kindness was taken for granted!”
Although Wendy admired Jesse, she also hoped he would find happiness in his life. So, after Jesse and Raquel announced their engagement, she took a few days to process the news, then became a passionate fan of this couple.
At that moment, seeing her idol’s fiancée being bullied, she could no longer hold back. She stepped forward and argued, “She went through so much trouble to save you, giving you a second chance in life. You don’t have to be grateful, but how could you accuse her of lying?”
Caleb scoffed lightly. “What a fool.”
Wendy flared up. “Who are you calling a fool?”
Caleb didn’t respond, but his icy gaze said it all. Anger surged within Wendy, and almost instinctively, she felt the urge to slap him. Surrounded by her colleagues, she knew that if word got out that she had slapped a patient, not only would she lose her job, but her idol would also view her differently.
