Chapter 194: Do Not Read

Raquel was overwhelmed with sadness, almost wanting to leave immediately. Her future father-in-law had lost to Chelsea, and similarly, her future husband had failed to chase Caleb away. Upon seeing her appearance, Joseph, who had been sitting below, instantly found himself unable to keep his composure. For the sake of Raquel’s future happiness, he decided to let her go. However, her wedding was disrupted by others, and the Quixall family members were so incapable. How can such a family possibly protect someone as innocent and kind as Raquel? At that thought, Joseph made up his mind. Bracing himself against the table, he was about to rise from his chair.

Terry, quick as lightning, gave him a harsh kick below. “What are you doing? The situation is already chaotic enough. Are you trying to drag the Doyle family into further trouble by intervening now?” Caught off guard, Joseph was suddenly kicked by his father, sending him tumbling back into his seat.

“Dad, look at how pitiful Raquel looks! Jesse simply can’t protect her. Maybe I should—”

Terry glared in anger. “What are you talking about? Are you suggesting that you should marry Ivan Levinson’s daughter here? Aren’t you afraid that the Doyle family will be ridiculed by others?”

Joseph, having had his intention exposed, looked away in frustration. Really now. My dad is just too old-fashioned. Has there never been an instance where someone marries another on their wedding day? Why is it that others can do as they please, yet I’m not allowed? What a bummer!

Just as everyone was pondering how to wrap up the day, Caleb suddenly spoke up. “Mr. Quixall, Ms. Sherman, I originally intended to offer you both an opportunity. However, since you failed to value it, you can’t blame me for what happens next.” He walked onto the stage, and then he pulled out a piece of paper from his pocket. “This is a letter Ms. Levinson wrote to Mr. Jesse. She feels shy to read it out herself. Would you mind doing her the favor by reading it?”

The emcee was at a loss, casting an inquiring gaze toward George. George had no idea what exactly Caleb had brought out, but his instincts told him it surely wasn’t anything good. And so, he shouted in anger, “Do not read it!”

Caleb chuckled lightly. “Why can’t others read it? Could it be that you’re afraid someone might uncover some unspeakable secret?” George glared at him, then turned to the emcee with a threatening tone. “If you dare to read it, don’t even think about having a future in Plainstedt!”

“It’s not that I don’t want to read it. It’s that Mr. Quixall doesn’t want me to. Please, can you show me some mercy and let me go?”

Caleb didn’t take the paper. Instead, he turned to look at Raquel. “Ms. Levinson, would you prefer to read this letter yourself or should someone else read it for you? The choice is yours.” A pallor had taken over Raquel’s face, her body trembling noticeably. She looked utterly pitiful. “I–I…”

The next second, an idea sparked in her mind. She threw her arms around Jesse, her voice trembling with tears. “Jesse, I don’t understand what he’s saying. Please save me… Save me…” Jesse gently patted her back, soothingly saying, “It’s okay. I’m here.”

Subsequently, his eyes were filled with anger as he spoke in an icy voice. “Caleb, you’ve gone too far! The matter of kidnapping Raquel hasn’t been resolved, and now you’re forcing her to do things she doesn’t want to in public. No wonder she despises you!”

At last, the truth was spoken. Caleb’s gaze was devoid of warmth. “You think I’ve gone too far? There’s more where that came from. Jesse, it’s not your turn yet. Given enough time, I would do to you what you did to me five years ago, when you sent me to prison. I would personally cast you into hell!”
