Chapter 209: DNA Test
Noticing his sister’s displeasure, Jesse stepped forward with a smile. “Mr. Ferlito, allow me to answer that. I used to dwell in Snowdale. My household was a small one, composed of just me and my adoptive parents. One day, I saw the head of the Quixall family on TV, and I thought he looked like me. So, I discreetly went to get a DNA test. The test results showed that I am the biological son of the Quixall family’s head, so I rushed over to acknowledge our kinship.”
He responded thoroughly, but Manny furrowed his brow, revealing an expression of displeasure. “Mr. Jesse, I wasn’t asking you. I was asking your family. Don’t you find it rude to answer questions when they weren’t directed at you?”
Startled for a moment, Jesse quickly followed with an awkward, “I’m sorry.” He only responded proactively because he noticed Manny kept asking questions about himself. He didn’t expect Manny to be so indifferent and aloof.
Yelena gritted her teeth, about to stand up, when her father held her back. George shot her a stern look, then turned to Manny with a cheery smile and said, “Mr. Ferlito, my apologies. I was lost in thought just now. Now, I will answer your question, which is the same as Jesse’s. That was exactly what he told us back then.” He was implying that there was no need to ask again as it was simply a waste of time.
With a nonchalant tone, Manny said, “In that case, I have a question for you.”
George was taken aback. “What is it?”
Without hesitation, Manny launched a barrage of questions. “After seeing your appearance on TV, Mr. Jesse noticed a striking resemblance between you two. Consequently, he traveled a great distance to acknowledge you as his father. So, I want to ask, what kind of sample did he use for the DNA test? Hair, sweat, or fingernails? Furthermore, where did Mr. Jesse get these items from? Did you personally give them to him, Mr. Quixall? Or did he acquire them through other means?”
Even George hadn’t inquired about such details in the past, yet Manny, an outsider, did. Uncertain of Manny’s intentions, George nonetheless replied, “It must be my hair. I once had business in Snowdale, and it’s highly possible that I left some of my hair there.”
Manny remarked, “That just makes things even more bizarre. Mr. Quixall, you said you visited Snowdale before, where you left behind a strand of your hair. However, the village is teeming with people. How did Mr. Jesse identify the origin of that single strand of hair? How did he eliminate all other possibilities and ascertain the hair belongs to you? Could there be a chance that Mr. Jesse made a mistake? That he… he isn’t your son at all?”
At that point in the conversation, George was slightly irritated. “Mr. Ferlito, what exactly are you implying? I’m absolutely certain that Jesse is my child! If you’re here to sow discord by asking these detailed questions, then I’m afraid I can’t entertain you any longer!”
Having said that, he grabbed Jesse’s wrist, ready to leave. Manny quickly called out to stop them. “Mr. Quixall, please hold on. I admit that my words earlier were somewhat…imprudent, but it was all in order to fulfill a request from Mr. Vignes. He’s looking for Mr. Jesse because…”
He suddenly slowed down, and he continued in a respectful tone. “It’s because he suspects Mr. Jesse might be his estranged offspring, and he wants to conduct a paternity test with Mr. Jesse to confirm it.”
