Chapter 208: Is That So Impressive?
As they were conversing, a figure gradually approached them. “Mr. Quixall, is this young man your son, Jesse?” Even though Manny was already aware of Jesse’s identity, he deliberately asked again with unclear intentions.
George was taken aback, utterly unprepared for Manny to initiate a conversation with him. Manny was the chief butler of the Xiques family. Over the many years, the household staff of the Xiques family came and went, but his position remained unshakeable. It was clear how much he had won the favor of the head of the Xiques family. The Xiques family was the most prominent family in Jexburgh, unrivaled throughout the entire nation. No one could compare to them.
If anyone wished to speak with Harris, they had to go through several layers of bureaucracy. The message would first be passed down to Manny, who then relayed it to Harris. Only after Harris agreed to the meeting could the outsider barely exchange a minute’s worth of conversation with him. No matter the magnitude of the issue, if it took longer than a minute, Harris would rise and depart, offering no opportunity for anyone seeking assistance. For Harris, time was essentially money. Among the numerous individuals seeking his help, those who could hold his attention for a full three minutes were few and far between.
As such, George felt as though he was in a dream when he saw Manny approaching him. “Hmm?” Seeing that George didn’t respond, merely standing in place as if lost in thought, Manny couldn’t help but furrow his brows, puzzled. Deborah’s heart skipped a beat. She quickly stepped forward and said, “Yes! This is our son, Jesse! George is lost in his thoughts for a moment. We hope you won’t take offense!”
Manny glanced at George, deciding not to ask what the latter was thinking. He turned to Deborah and asked, “Has Mr. Jesse been living with you since childhood, or did he return after going abroad?” Deborah was instantly dumbfounded. The fact that Jesse was their true son was something almost everyone on the internet knew about. As such, she was confounded by how Manny didn’t seem to know, even though he was the butler of the Xiques family.
She was worried that Manny would get upset, so she replied, “Jesse came back later. For the first twenty years, he lived somewhere else. It wasn’t until five years ago that we found him and gave him a better life.” Whenever the matter was discussed, Deborah would become teary-eyed, feeling uneasy. For twenty years, her biological son was adrift elsewhere, and she was unable to meet him. Whenever she thought about the potentially harsh life he had led over the years, her heart ached. However, Manny remained as cold and indifferent as ever.
He asked, “Where exactly did Mr. Jesse live before? How many people are in his previous family? Does he have any siblings? Also, how did he come to recognize you all, and what means did he use?” A barrage of questions left the four members of the Quixall family utterly bewildered.
Unable to contain her curiosity, Yelena asked, “Mr. Ferlito, what’s the reason behind all these questions? Has Jesse done something wrong? Or is there something Mr. Xiques needs from him?” Manny looked at her with an inscrutable expression. “Ms. Quixall, all you need to do is answer. If you don’t, we have plenty of ways to get the truth.”
Bewildered, Yelena felt a surge of anger suddenly well up within her heart. How dare he speak so rudely! Does he think he’s all that just because he’s working for the Xiques family?
