Revenge Forged in Prison
Chapter 226: Do Not Make Excuses For Him
Caleb’s pitying gaze completely enraged Jesse. “I’ve lost myself? Then what the hell are you? You just did five years in prison for me. Who are you to act all high and mighty?”
Spotting a pair of scissors on the table, Jesse snatched them up and cut off a chunk of Caleb’s hair. Caleb scoffed. “So Mr. Jesse has a thing for giving haircuts now? How about grooming this little one too?”
As if on cue, the kitten let out a soft meow. Jesse’s hand jerked violently, the scissors clattering to the floor. “You… How is this damn thing here? I get it now. That woman’s working with you. You’re both out to ruin me!” Jesse’s chest heaved with barely contained fury.
Caleb smirked. “Think whatever you want. This is my cat now. Touch it, and you’ll regret it.” Jesse shot him a venomous glare. “Just you wait!” As soon as he finished speaking, he stormed out of the door.
Caleb narrowed his eyes at Jesse’s retreating figure, remembering an incident from when Jesse first joined the Quixall family. Back then, Caleb hadn’t known about Jesse’s fear of cats. Spotting a stray in the corner, he’d gone to pet it, only for Jesse to freeze in place, uncharacteristically still.
Caleb found it puzzling. “Are you allergic to cat fur? If so, I’ll keep it at a distance.” However, before he could even make a move, Jesse collapsed, his breaths short and his face pale. Yelena had come running at the commotion. The moment she saw Jesse’s condition, she sternly reprimanded, “Caleb, what did you do to Jesse again?”
Caleb had been furious. “Nothing! He just—” “Stop lying! You’ve always resented him. Admit it!” Without even glancing his way, Yelena had helped Jesse up. “Jesse, are you okay? This is all my fault. I never should’ve left you alone with him. I’m truly sorry for causing you distress.”
Jesse had put on a frail act. “Yelena, I’m fine. Don’t blame Caleb, too. The cat leaped over and startled me.” This only made Yelena angrier. “Stop defending him! He wanted this to happen!” She turned back to look at the silent Caleb. “Since he loves being with cats, he might as well sleep in the cat bed from now on!”
That night, Caleb had been kicked out of his own home, forced to stay in a cheap 24-hour motel. Throughout the entire night, not a single person had shown him any concern. Deborah, who always claimed to treat them equally, had doted on Jesse without a second thought for her other son.
It was then that Caleb saw the truth clearly. To Jesse, the Quixall family was a paradise. To Caleb, it was nothing but a frozen hell.
Back in the present, Caleb glanced out the window and froze. A meticulously dressed woman stood outside. Is that Raquel? After lying low for a while, she’s making her comeback already? He couldn’t help but wonder what she and Jesse would talk about. As he pondered, a brilliant idea suddenly flashed through his mind. The world of two was too quiet. Sometimes, they needed a little spice to make things interesting.
