Chapter 237: Figure Things Out
“What do you mean by manipulating the results? Yelena, what’s going on?” Deborah asked in confusion.
Yelena forced a smile. “Mom, there’s nothing to worry about. He’s just talking nonsense! He refuses to accept the hospital’s results and keeps accusing me of meddling with them. It’s absolutely exasperating!”
“I understand now… Caleb, you clearly still resent us for what happened.”
Caleb’s gaze burned with hatred. “Can you really blame me? You manipulated the compatibility results to protect your own son, then even went so far as running me down with a car for his sake. Every move you made was self-serving, driven solely by your own interests. I deeply regret having ended up in the wrong family!”
Deborah was at a loss for words. She could only look at Caleb with a face full of guilt. After a moment, she said, “Still, Caleb, you shouldn’t falsely accuse your sister. While you were in the hospital, she shut herself away, refusing to see anyone. When she finally gathered herself and went to visit you, she found you with the daughter of the Yardley family. And then, you told her you were no longer part of the Quixall family…” Tears welled up in Deborah’s eyes. “If you’re not part of the Quixall family, then who is? We’ve spent twenty years under the same roof. Can you really say there’s no bond between us at all? Hearing you speak so coldly and without a trace of warmth is truly heartbreaking!”
Jesse quickly comforted her, “Mom, don’t be upset. Caleb just needs some time to figure things out. Once he does, he’ll come back home with us.”
Tears streaming down her face, Deborah gave a slight nod. “You’re right, but it’s hard to say how long it will take for him to fully come to terms with his inner turmoil…”
Caleb’s eyes were icy as he regarded the small group before him.
“Let’s settle this once and for all. The person who ran me down that day was Mr. Quixall, wasn’t it? And all of you knew the truth from the very beginning, didn’t you?”
The tears in Deborah’s eyes abruptly stopped flowing. She exchanged glances with the other two before she said, “Caleb, what are you talking about? Your father loves you so much. How could he possibly bear to hit you with his car? That day when you jumped from the second floor, your father was frantic with worry, terrified something might have happened to you. He searched for quite a while, but he couldn’t find you. Later, when we heard about you again, you were already in the hospital…”
Caleb let out a scoff. “Mrs. Quixall, you truly have a knack for spinning tales! My car accident happened right near the Quixall residence, and you claimed that Mr. Quixall couldn’t find me?”
Unable to argue against him, Deborah stood awkwardly in her place. Yelena stepped forward, shielding Deborah behind her. “Caleb, don’t push your luck! I can tolerate you framing me, but how could you say such things when Dad has always treated you well? Don’t you have a conscience?”
With a sarcastic smile, Caleb remarked, “It’s been a while, my darling Yelena. It seems your tall tales haven’t changed much, but your ability to make unfounded countercharges has certainly improved!”
Visibly upset, Yelena exclaimed, “Caleb, you!”
Jesse said in a sorrowful tone, “Caleb, you don’t seem to be in the best mood today. Let’s hold off and continue this conversation when you’re feeling better…”
The door was gently closed.
Caleb massaged his forehead, then started to tidy up the living room that had been left in a complete mess. When Deborah first arrived, her curiosity had led her to disrupt everything, leaving a mess in her wake. Now that everyone had gone, the burden of tidying up fell entirely on him. He could only hope they wouldn’t return anytime soon!
