Listen to this chapter:

Casey didn’t believe it at all. “That’s impossible! Miriam never intended to kill me in the first place. She hadn’t even ordered anyone to lay a hand on me when that vile man jumped the gun, declaring he’d lash me ten times. I had already fainted, yet his strikes were so ruthless that they jolted me back to consciousness!”

Chelsea scoffed coldly. “Had he not threatened to beat you up, you’d be six feet under by now!”

Casey was stunned. “Is that so? This woman must be deceiving me!”

“Believe it or not, that’s the truth.” Chelsea had no intention of playing the savior. She casually waved over a few housekeepers, instructing them to toss Casey into the basement. The plan was to let her out the next day.

When Casey was being led away, her gaze was still vacant, as if she was contemplating the words that had just been spoken. Could that man have saved me? How is that possible? I went to the hospital to bully him and even fabricated stories online, leading netizens to cyberbully him. After all that, why would he save me?

In a state of unease, she bit her lower lip hard. She watched, wide-eyed, as the door to the basement closed before her, plunging the world into darkness.

When Caleb returned home, he found the front door wide open. To his surprise, Jesse and the others had returned.

He exploded in fury, “Who gave you the permission to enter my apartment?”

Those three people looked down on his place, yet they kept returning. No one knew exactly how they had managed to get in, or what they had done once they were inside.

Yelena stated matter-of-factly, “Your apartment? What do you mean? You lived in the Quixall residence for twenty years, didn’t you? Did we make a fuss about it? Right now, we’re just planning to stay for a few days, and you’re already overreacting. Do you think this is a fair response to all the years of effort Mom and Dad have put into raising you?”

Suppressing his anger, Caleb warned, “If you don’t leave now, don’t blame me for resorting to force!”

Yelena widened her eyes. “Are you really going to hit us? Go on, then! Hit us. I’m curious to see how much you can afford to compensate!”

Left with no other choice, Caleb had to resort to calling the police.

After the police arrived, Deborah was the first to lodge a complaint, playing the victim. “Officer, I’m this man’s mother. Not only does he want to drive me away, but he’s also threatened us, saying he would hit us. We really have no other choice but to move out, yet he’s accused us of having a bad attitude and called the police on us…”

Yelena also stepped forward to testify, saying, “He probably isn’t in the right state of mind today. He threatened us with violence as soon as he saw us. My mom was terrified. She even considered moving out, but he still wouldn’t leave us alone…”

Jesse rolled up his sleeves, revealing the spot where he had bumped into a table a few days prior. “This spot is where my brother hit me. He was too harsh. My arm turned purple instantly.”

The policeman’s expression instantly turned serious when he saw the evidence. “Mr. Jenkins, please come with me. We’ll discuss the details back at the police station.”

Caleb was essentially at his wit's end. What am I supposed to do now when I’m said to have hit someone? Encountering this family is indeed the misfortune of my life.

Deborah quickly chimed in, “There’s no need to involve the police. We don’t take this matter to heart. As long as he promises not to drive us away or lay a hand on us in the future, we’re willing to forgive him.”

The police officer asked, “Mr. Jenkins, what’s your take on this?”

Caleb backed down and said, “All right. I promise not to drive them away, nor will I use any force against them.”

Even so, Caleb was taken back to the police station by the officers. After he finished giving his statement, he was allowed to return home.
