Upon arriving at Caleb’s place, Chelsea and Casey saw a woman tossing something from above. Shortly after, Caleb came rushing down from upstairs, cradling the object delicately in his hands. Upon closer inspection, Casey realized it was a kitten. Moreover, the pattern on the little kitten was a mix of black and white, identical to the one she had abandoned. They were both black and white and a month or two old.
Is this a coincidence? Casey took a step forward, intending to seek clarity. Chelsea, however, held her back, signaling her not to go over. Casey fell silent, sensing that it wasn’t the best time for anything else. Thus, she obediently stayed where she was, quietly observing Caleb.
Caleb was observed meandering about, finally coming to a halt under a large tree. He used his hands to dig into the earth, creating a small pit, and gently placed the kitten inside. After observing it for a considerable amount of time, he finally covered it with soil and left the area.
Chelsea, who had been silent all along, suddenly said, “Don’t you see? Could someone who gets upset over a cat really be as malicious as the online rumors suggest?”
Casey paused for a moment before retorting stubbornly, “So what? These are two separate matters.” He had been so harsh on her that a single act couldn’t possibly alter the negative impression he had left on her.
Chelsea sighed and said, “With time, you’ll realize how absurd the online comments about him are.” Casey neither agreed nor refuted that statement. Instead, she was solely focused on the kitten’s grave. After a moment, she suggested, “Let’s bury it somewhere else. If we leave it here, stray dogs might get to it.”
Chelsea revealed a faint smile, saying, “All right. We’ll go with your idea.”
When they returned to Caleb’s place once again, they saw him rushing down from upstairs. Moreover, he was visibly seething with anger this time. Seeing them together, Caleb was clearly taken aback.
“Ms. Yardley, why are you here?”
Chelsea asked with concern, “What happened? Why are you—” Hearing the surrounding chatter, she abruptly looked up, only to find smoke billowing from a nearby apartment.
Taking into account Caleb’s complexion and the information she had gathered, Chelsea boldly deduced a terrifying truth. “Is it your place that’s on fire?” With a serious expression, Caleb gave a nod. “What happened? Did the power lines short-circuit?”
“No. Yelena was cooking, and she scorched the pan, which ended up causing a fire.”
“Ah!” Chelsea covered her mouth in surprise. “Doesn’t that mean you have nowhere to live?”
Caleb let out a sigh. “I’ll just look for another apartment. It’s just that the current situation is a bit tricky to handle.” All the furniture was ruined, and he had no idea how much he would have to compensate the landlord. Based on his savings at that time, he definitely wouldn’t have enough to compensate.
Chelsea understood and suggested, “In that case, I’ll find a place for you. In fact, you could stay at my place. We have plenty of spare rooms that haven’t been used in a while. They’re all covered in dust.”
Caleb had initially wanted to refuse, but if he held onto his pitiful pride at that juncture, he would truly end up sleeping on the streets. “Ms. Yardley, thank you, and I’m sorry for the inconvenience I’ve caused you again.”
Chelsea smiled and responded, “It’s no trouble at all. Besides, you can help me clean up a bit. The house feels so lifeless without anyone in it. Staying there occasionally can be quite eerie.”
The two shared a glance and a smile, creating an incredibly warm and cozy atmosphere. Meanwhile, Casey had been watching the two of them all along. No wonder Mrs. Yardley has called Caleb over. It turns out he has such a good relationship with her daughter. Perhaps before long, he would become the live-in son-in-law of the Yardley family.
