Chapter 249: Distorting the Truth
When Deborah and her two children descended the stairs, they witnessed the harmonious scene between Caleb and Chelsea.
Pointing at Caleb, Deborah exclaimed, “Well, it seems you indeed have an inappropriate relationship with Ms. Yardley! You two have no shame, displaying such behavior in public! I can’t even begin to imagine what you might do behind closed doors!”
Caleb retorted, “How are we shameless? What exactly did we do?”
Deborah gave him a frosty look. “You’re the one full of crazy ideas. How could I ever compare to you? About the things you’ve done, I’m even embarrassed to mention!”
Caleb also found himself somewhat provoked by her. “Don’t be shy now. With all these people watching, just spell it out for us. Let everyone here have a say in the matter!”
With a stern expression, Deborah began to count off on her fingers, saying, “Firstly, the moment you returned to the Quixall family, you started showing us attitude, opposing us at every turn. When Yelena went to get you, you treated her with such disrespect, as if she were beneath you, and sent her away!”
Without giving Caleb a chance to argue, she continued, “Secondly, you forced Jesse to take medicine and even peeled shrimp for him, almost causing his death! As for the third matter, it just happened. You had a minor disagreement with Yelena, yet you went to such an extreme as to set her on fire, practically wanting her life. Am I right?”
Caleb taunted, “Mrs. Quixall, your talent for distorting the truth is unparalleled. If there were a university course dedicated to this skill, I bet you’d already have your doctorate!”
Furious, Deborah roared, “Don’t sidetrack with irrelevant matters! Just tell me if I’m right or not!”
Caleb let out a scoff, saying, “None of them are correct. In fact, everything is exactly the opposite of what you’ve said. Firstly, on the day I was released from prison, I merely spoke a few truths. However, Yelena couldn’t bear to hear it. She pushed me so hard that I spat out blood! Secondly, it was Jesse himself who requested the shrimp to be peeled. I repeatedly warned you all that seafood is considered risky food, and too much of it isn’t good for you. Yet, you accused me of begrudging him and forced me to peel the shrimp for him! Thirdly, it was clearly Yelena who killed my cat first, yet you claimed it was just a minor disagreement between us! Moreover, she was the one who scorched the pot while cooking, but you accused me of setting her on fire. If you aren’t distorting the truth, what is it?”
The onlooking residents had no idea who was lying. They simply found the argument to be riveting, another source of entertainment for the day.
Seeing no one on her side, Deborah couldn’t help but feel a bit flustered. “Everything I’ve said is true! I haven’t lied!”
However, no matter how much she tried to prove herself, the residents remained indifferent, showing no intention of speaking up for her.
Right then, an old man stepped forward. “I told you, didn’t I? It’s not wise to engage in such reckless activities. Look what’s happened now. A fire’s started. How are we supposed to live here after this?”
That statement sparked imaginations, causing the residents to share a quiet round of laughter before they all dispersed.
Seeing that no one else came to interrupt, Chelsea calmly said, “Mrs. Quixall, based on what you’ve just said, I have every right to sue you for defamation. If you refuse to apologize, you’ll receive a legal notice from the Yardley family tomorrow. At that point, it would be difficult to resolve the matter.”
Deborah’s face turned pale. She had momentarily spoken without thinking earlier, which inadvertently involved Chelsea as well. To Deborah’s surprise, Chelsea was so upset about it that she even considered suing her.
