Chapter 81 What an Idiot
Upon hearing my aggressive words, Else immediately put on a weak facade and gently wiped away her tears. “I know you hate me, Jane, but how could you say such things about me?” she asked softly. “I wasn’t responsible for any of those things before. After all, I feel a connection to you as well. I’m fine with not getting any of the family properties. I just hope that you won’t misunderstand me.”
I arched an eyebrow, saying calmly, “There’s no misunderstanding between us, only dislike. Also, my dislike for you isn’t recent, so why are you acting all pitiful here?”
Elsa’s eyes widened in shock, and she looked extremely aggrieved. There were even some undried tears still on her face.
Seeing this, Jack immediately came to her defense and glared at me in displeasure. “What’s with your attitude?” he asked harshly. “Elsa has never once slandered you. On the contrary, you were the one who attacked her first! I’m warning you, even if Elsa leaves the Brown household one day, I’ll still think of her as my biological sister. Nobody gets to bully her!”
I had long since grown accustomed to his attitude. Folding my arms across my chest, I looked expressionlessly at him and Elsa. “If Elsa really wants those shares, then I’ll leave the Brown family and never return!” I declared. “I’d certainly like to see whether it’s me or the Brown family’s shares that she actually cares about!”
Jack gritted his teeth. “Elsa has a right to gain those shares! Besides, aren’t you going to start your own business? If so, what’s wrong with giving her your shares? She’s your sister, so shouldn’t you be watching out for her?”
Probably to add to the effect, Elsa deliberately lowered her head and squeezed out a few more tears. “It’s alright, Jack,” she said softly. “I’ve already said that I can do without the shares. If these shares are the price I have to pay to salvage the relationship between me and Jane, I have no complaints even if I end up with nothing.”
I almost laughed out loud at the two-man show they were putting on. Jack truly was an idiot. He thought that Elsa was being sincere with him when, in reality, she was treating him as her personal attack dog. Did he really not realize that? I honestly didn’t understand how someone as idiotic as Jack was managing the other companies under Brown Group!
Too lazy to bother with them anymore, I nodded at my parents before promptly leaving.
Just as I left the house, I suddenly received a call from Zachary. He sounded exhausted. “I have something important to tell you, Ms. Brown,” he said, getting straight to the point. “Would it be convenient for us to meet up at the same place as last time?”
Naturally, I agreed. If it weren’t a serious matter, he wouldn’t sound so serious.
Half an hour later, we met up at the usual place. It had only been a few days since we last saw each other, yet he seemed to have become a completely different person. His original high-spirited self had been reduced to a dispirited husk.
“I’m really sorry, Ms. Brown,” he said. “The core game technology made by Team 1 was suddenly lost, and a few of our team members jumped ship, so our years of hard work have pretty much gone down the drain. You invested in me, so I feel it’s only right to let you know that something has gone wrong. Don’t worry, I’ll return the money you invested in me as soon as I can.”
Listening to his feeble tone, I frowned severely. How could I have forgotten that in my previous life, Zachary had lost the core game technology due to his friends’ betrayal and almost never recovered from the blow? If he hadn’t been mentally strong and chosen not to give up, he might never have racked up his later achievements.
“I understand your predicament, Mr. Sinclair,” I told him. “At the same time, I believe in your abilities. I believe that as long as I…
