The monkeys keenly sensed the presence of others and turned their collective gaze toward Samson and Meghan.
Evangeline said, "Ignore them. They pose no threat." The monkeys then looked away and encircled Evangeline. They even offered her bananas, placing a bunch of fruit in front of her.
Evangeline said, "You two go ahead. I'll just have two."
When she finished eating, she stood up and set off for a stroll. This time, she didn't go up the hill; instead, she walked along the foothill, intending to explore other places. The monkeys wanted to follow, but Evangeline said, "Don't follow me. Go play on your own. I'll walk alone." The next second, the monkey king signaled its troop to return to the mountain.
Meghan and Samson quietly followed Evangeline from a distance. After a brief walk, Evangeline stumbled upon some wild myrtle berries. There was a bounty of ripe, black berries, each about the size of a thumb.
Memories of her childhood flooded back—the delightful taste, but also the painful aftermath of overindulging. Consuming too many myrtle berries caused diarrhea. Evangeline vividly recalled the discomfort she'd faced after a berry binge and how her friend had helped her, even holding his breath while cleaning her soiled pants. The experience had disgusted him so much that he couldn't eat for days, and Evangeline couldn't look him in the eye.
Evangeline ate the berries cautiously, limiting herself to about twenty, and continued walking. Before Meghan had ventured far, she ran to the myrtle plant, eyes gleaming with excitement. She eagerly plucked the berries with both hands and gulped them down, even swallowing some leaves. Samson followed suit, and the two devoured the berries in silence until their stomachs were full, finally stopping when they regurgitated the berries with a medley of belches.
Meghan said, "Sam, wasn't my decision spot on? Look what it led us to—food!"
"I'm full! I haven't been this full in a long time!" Samson replied. It was just wild fruit, but it satiated their hunger. Samson's face lit up with a grin. "Well, you've always been the smartest since you were a kid. Thanks to you, Meghan, I wouldn't be stuck surviving on wild vegetables alone today. You're my lucky star, Meghan." Meghan smiled.
Meghan suggested, "Sam, let's keep exploring. We might find more to eat, or we can gather some to take with us." Samson nodded in agreement.
As the terrain was rarely traveled, each step left visible marks on the ground. Following these traces for nearly half an hour, they finally spotted Evangeline. There was a cliff ahead. As they peered over the edge, a breathtaking landscape of mountains and forests came into view. Evangeline was sitting on the cliff's edge, watching the scenery. Sitting at the very edge, the slightest accident could send her tumbling down. Just then, a malevolent gleam appeared in Meghan's eyes. If only Evangeline fell off the cliff and died in this remote mountain, she thought. The thought consumed her. Silently approaching and pushing her seemed effortless. The idea repeated in Meghan's mind like a sinister chant. She whispered inwardly, "I'm going to push Evangeline off the cliff! I'm going to push Evangeline off the cliff! I'm going to push Evangeline off the cliff!" With a malicious glint in her eyes, Meghan slowly advanced toward Evangeline, taking slow, light steps to avoid alerting her.
Samson frowned and tried to follow, but Meghan caught his shoulder, shook her head, and held him back. Quietly, she whispered, "Don't come over. I'll apologize to her. Maybe we can make peace before leaving the forest." Samson thought for a moment and nodded. Evangeline, skilled in wilderness survival, could be an invaluable ally. Samson looked at Meghan from behind, relieved. He always saw her as sensible. Even with her grievances, she had repeatedly apologized to Evangeline to keep the peace—a trait he admired.
Meghan soon stopped behind Evangeline, who remained motionless at the cliff's edge, oblivious to her approach. The sinister glint in Meghan's eyes intensified. Suddenly, she bent down and forcefully pushed Evangeline off the cliff. Meghan was so excited that her entire body trembled. She quickly took a few steps back, fearing she would fall. Her plot had succeeded. Finally rid of that wretched Evangeline, she silently cheered.
"Meghan, what have you done?!" Samson exclaimed in horror. He rushed to the edge of the cliff. A loud noise echoed from below. Samson's face paled; his feet went cold as he anxiously peered below, but his view was obstructed by a thick cluster of trees.
"Evangeline! Can you hear me? Evangeline, are you still alive?" Samson shouted, his voice trembling. There was no response, only the wind.
Meghan's triumphant voice came from behind. "Stop shouting. It took her so long to fall. Look at the height of the cliff. Her bones must be broken. There's no way she survived."
Samson trembled violently. He stood up and glared at Meghan with bloodshot eyes. "Why did you push Evangeline off the cliff? Do you realize she could die from this?" he asked furiously.
Unapologetic, Meghan declared, "I wanted her dead! You've seen what she did to us! She was always hitting us. She did nothing when you had a fever. She even took you to the water and hit you; she left you to die in the water! She is one vicious woman. She's better off dead! Why are you so upset? I killed her to avenge you!"
"It's fine if you don't thank me, but you scolded me because of her. You took my kindness for granted! I have always known, no matter how good I am to you, I can never be better than your sister in your eyes!" Meghan bellowed. "If you think pushing her off the cliff was wrong, why don't you push me off too? Since you're so fond of her, go ahead and push me off!"
Conflicted emotions flickered across Samson's face; his fists clenched. Meghan lowered her voice, her words catching in her throat. "Sam, you know how much she despises us and our family. She's aiming to harm you now, and when we return home, she will hurt our parents and brothers. If I don't get rid of her, our family will die at her hands! I'm standing up against this wretched woman because I wanted to protect our family!" she continued with fervor. "Sam, have you forgotten? Evangeline betrayed us by selling the Gallagher family company shares at a meager price to a rival company. She sold our parents out for so much money! She's been scheming against our family for a long time. If we don't put an end to her, we're only waiting to die at her hands!"
Samson found himself swayed by her words. Meghan was right; Evangeline had long severed ties with the Gallagher family and regarded them as enemies. Before joining the show, Evangeline had already targeted the Gallagher family, and if left unchecked, she would pose a serious threat. Even after everything, the idea of her tragic end saddened Samson. Taking a life was a thought he had never entertained. Yet, what had unfolded could not be undone. He couldn't deny Evangeline's wrongdoings, and perhaps fate had caught up with her. Meghan had acted to protect her family, even if ruthlessly. Samson, always reluctant to resort to extremes, had failed to stop the harm Evangeline had done. That was a responsibility Meghan had taken on herself, and he couldn't blame her for that.
Regaining his composure, Samson spoke firmly. "It's good that you're looking out for us, but let's not resort to this again. Killing is against the law. Even if Evangeline was plotting against us, we could've found another way."
Meghan replied softly, "Okay, I'll listen to you. Can you keep this between us? Don't tell anyone, not even our parents or Eddie and Jasper, okay?" Evangeline was their parents' biological daughter. Meghan knew that if they found out she played a role in Evangeline's death, it would create a serious issue for her. The rest of the Gallagher family were not as gullible as Samson.
Samson hesitated briefly before nodding. "Okay, I promise. You were only doing this for me and to protect the family. I will not let anyone know about this, and I won't let you take all the blame."
Meghan wanted to avenge him and protect their family. She was the one who had saved his life. Even if he knew she had done something wrong, he couldn't bring himself to blame her. Meghan smiled and threw herself into Samson's arms. "You're always so good to me. I love you the most, Sam."
Samson smiled gently and said, "You saved my life. Who else should I stand by if not you?"
"Evangeline had done nothing when I was dying in front of her. For someone with no empathy like her, perhaps a fresh start in her next life is the best she can hope for," added Samson.
