โYou seem to know Charles very well,โ Theodore said, a meaningful look on his face.
Oscar remained silent.
โHow do you find the time to get to know him?โ Theodore asked.
Oscar offered no response.
โYouโve been wanting his girlfriend for a long time, havenโt you?โ Theodore stated, suddenly certain.
Oscar glanced at Theodore. โCut the crap. Just do what I say.โ
He then began to complain. He was the one who had supported and comforted Theodore during difficult times.
As soon as Hannah left the hall, she saw Jimmy waiting at the gate.
โMrs. Wells, starting today, I will be your driver and bodyguard, protecting you at all times,โ Jimmy said respectfully.
Hannah smiled. โThanks.โ
Jimmy didn't react to her friendliness. They drove to the Cooper building. She entered her office, followed by Rose.
Rose was surprised to see the man beside Hannah.
โOh, my bodyguard, Jimmy,โ Hannah explained.
Roseโs surprise deepened. Why did she need a bodyguard while working in her family's company?
โMy secretary, Rose,โ Hannah said, ignoring Rose's expression.
โHello,โ Rose offered, extending her handโa common workplace courtesy.
But Jimmy ignored her, standing impassively.
Embarrassed, Rose withdrew her hand, her gaze shifting to Hannah, as she composed herself.
โIโve tracked down the leader of the sales groupโs protest. Itโs Mason Porter, head of inventory analysis in the sales department.โ
โMason Porter?โ Hannah murmured, struggling to recall him.
โHeโs been here twenty years but hasnโt accomplished much. His seniority allows him to disrespect others. He was respectful to Jane, but felt free to yell at the sales director. Heโs upset about his transfer to the support center and the denial of a supervisor position, so he incited the transferred employees to protest.โ
โEven with his tenure, he couldn't control everyone. His deference to Jane, rather than the director, is suspicious.โ
โNot really. Janeโs family ties make her the obvious choice to please.โ
โBut yelling at the director?โ Hannah questioned.
Rose nodded, conceding the point.
โMason must know someone in senior leadership,โ Hannah concluded. โHe has backing, which explains his behavior.โ
Rose agreed. โOkay, Iโll ask around.โ
โNo, Iโll handle it. I have other tasks for you,โ Hannah said.
โOkay,โ Rose replied respectfully.
โIโve reviewed underperforming projects in the sales department. I donโt want to focus on those already underway; they wonโt yield unexpected profits. We need to address long-standing problems like the unfinished building and Light Building.โ Hannah handed Rose a file. โSort these out by dayโs end. We meet tomorrow at 10 a.m.โ
โYes,โ Rose nodded, then added, โBlack coffee for you?โ
โYes, thank you,โ Hannah replied. She then turned to Jimmy. โWhat do you want?โ
โWater is fine.โ
Hannah was speechless. โTo stay alert and maintain peak physical condition,โ Jimmy added.
Hannah thought Jimmy could be overly serious, but she wouldn't discourage it. โGet him a glass of water,โ she instructed Rose.
Rose left, and Hannah began working. Then, she called someone.
โMr. Richards,โ she said.
โMs. Hannah, what can I do for you?โ he replied politely.
โDo you know Mason?โ
โIโve heard of him.โ
โDoes he have connections in senior leadership or among our board members?โ Hannah asked directly. She preferred to consult HR directly rather than tasking Rose.
โI donโt know much. He has a bad personality and is arrogant.โ
โBut he listens to Jane.โ
โSo you suspect Mason is connected to someone high-ranking, possibly familiar with Roger Cooper?โ Percy grasped her implication.
โExactly.โ
โIโll need time to investigate,โ Percy said.
โNo, no need,โ Hannah interrupted. She had called Percy for inside information; if he didn't have it, she wouldn't waste his time.
โWhat if I fired him?โ
โUm, youโre new hereโฆโ Percy hesitated, considering the idea too bold and potentially damaging to the company's reputation.
โCan you think of a better way to ensure compliance with the transfer arrangements?โ
โNot yet,โ Percy admitted.
โThen we need to make an example of someone.โ
โThis could be highly profitable, or disastrously bad,โ Percy warned.
โOkay, thanks. I understand the risks,โ Hannah replied.
โIโm on board,โ Percy declared, agreeing to her plan.
โWithin half an hour, announce Masonโs firing. I want everyone to know.โ
โYes.โ
Hannah hung up and resumed work.
Less than an hour later, the door burst open. Mason stood there, furious.
โHow can you fire me? Iโve worked here twenty years! Iโm not leaving until you give me a reason!โ
He looked threatening. Hannah felt grateful for Oscar's provision of a bodyguard. She saw Jimmy approach Mason. If Mason acted aggressively, Jimmy would intervene.
This gave her the confidence to say, โAs the Cooper heir, I can fire anyone I choose.โ
