Rose thought she might have misunderstood. She confirmed again. โDo you want me to inform Wayne?โ
โYep,โ Hannah nodded. โIโll give you the scheme. If Wayne asks for it, tell him you cannot give it to him for now because the final sales quota is still confidential.โ
Rose didnโt understand why Hannah didnโt want Wayne to know the final quota, especially since he was attending the bidding. Hannah was resetting the quota within the schemeโa fact known only to her and Rose, excluding the board. Rose suspected Hannah was keeping an eye on Wayne, but couldn't fathom why Hannah had offered to take him along.
โYou can tell him you have the scheme after refusing to give it to him,โ Hannah said.
Rose felt utterly lost. Was this a spy movie?
โJust do as I said,โ Hannah instructed, offering no explanation. โYou may go.โ
โOkay.โ Rose left.
Hannah smiled scornfully, muttering that the Sawyer family would pay double.
Meanwhile, Rose knocked on Wayneโs door.
โCome in.โ
Rose entered and reported, โMr. Cooper, Ms. Hannah asked me to inform you that you need to accompany her to the bureau for the bidding next week. She just submitted the South Bay New Town construction scheme, and itโs been approved by the board.โ
โMe?โ Wayne was surprised.
โMs. Hannah specified you.โ
โAre you sure?โ
โYes, Iโm certain,โ Rose replied.
Wayne remained dubious but agreed. โOkay, I see. Let me know the exact time on Monday, and Iโll go with her.โ
โYes, sir. If thereโs nothing else, Iโll be going.โ
โWait a minute,โ Wayne stopped her. โWas the scheme submitted in its original version?โ
โNo,โ Rose said, โthere were changes.โ
โWhat changed?โ
โMs. Hannah reset a more competitive bidding price,โ Rose answered truthfully.
โHow much?โ Wayne asked immediately.
โIโm sorry, sir, I canโt tell you. Ms. Hannah considers it confidential business information,โ Rose replied. โThe scheme is locked in my safe; I wonโt remove it until Monday.โ
Wayne pursed his lips, realizing they wouldnโt reveal it. Hannah was clearly watching him, likely taking him along for show rather than for his input in the bidding. Sheโd appeared generous to the senior executives; now, she was fulfilling that promise to avoid gossip. Wayne admitted she was far more clever than heโd initially thought.
โOkay, you may go now,โ Wayne dismissed Rose.
After she left, Wayne immediately called Charles. โThe scheme was changed. The sales quota might differ from the one I gave you.โ
Charles, currently reviewing the scheme, was stunned by Hannahโs South Bay New Town proposal. It was undeniably a cutting-edge concept, a decade ahead of anything else in Northfield! How had Hannah conceived such a modern and pragmatic plan? When had she become so competent, surpassing even him? He was thankful heโd adopted her scheme instead of arrogantly creating his own; otherwise, he would have been utterly defeated.
Hearing Wayneโs words, Charles asked, โHow much is it now?โ
He knew Hannah wouldnโt easily disclose information; heโd suspected this since Wayne obtained the scheme effortlessly. However, Wayneโs confirmation solidified his belief.
โI have no idea. Only Hannah, her assistant Rose, and the board know,โ Wayne answered.
โWhat about trying every means to get it?โ
โItโs risky. The directors favor those in power. My fatherโs in jail, so they wonโt take me seriously. We might expose ourselves if I ask them for the sales quota now.โ
โHow about bribing Rose?โ Charles suggested.
โImpossible. Rose is loyal to Hannah; she wonโt be bribed.โ
โThen we steal it.โ
Wayne was apprehensive. โHow?โ
โWhere do they keep the final scheme?โ Charles asked.
โRose has it. Bribing someone Hannah trusts so much is impossible.โ
โSteal it from Rose,โ Charles said. โWhere do you usually store your schemes?โ
โWe donโt save them on the computer except for confidential ones, which are downloaded onto a USB and locked in safes.โ
โDoes Rose have the key?โ Charles asked.
โYes.โ
โDoes she carry it everywhere?โ
โProbably.โ
โI see. Iโll get the key, and youโll get the scheme.โ
โIโm afraidโฆโ
โDonโt be afraid!โ Charles insisted. โDo as I say, and weโll succeed.โ
Wayne hesitated.
โWayne, would you still be promoted to your fatherโs position if Hannah succeeds? If she succeeds, sheโll remain vice-president. Only if she fails will you have a chance to regain your position.โ
Wayne gritted his teeth. โOkay, itโs a deal.โ
โWise choice,โ Charles praised. โSneak into Roseโs office to find the safe. Check if the cameras are working; if so, disable them, or youโll be caught.โ
โIโll try.โ
โLetโs start tonight.โ
โIsnโt that rushed?โ Wayne questioned.
โItโs best to resolve this quickly,โ Charles asserted.
โFine.โ
โDo as I said. Call me if you have trouble.โ
โOkay.โ
Charles hung up and smiled wickedly. He no longer underestimated Hannah; he would defeat her utterly.
