Listen to this chapter:

Rose thought she might have misunderstood. She confirmed again. โ€œDo you want me to inform Wayne?โ€

โ€œYep,โ€ Hannah nodded. โ€œIโ€™ll give you the scheme. If Wayne asks for it, tell him you cannot give it to him for now because the final sales quota is still confidential.โ€

Rose didnโ€™t understand why Hannah didnโ€™t want Wayne to know the final quota, especially since he was attending the bidding. Hannah was resetting the quota within the schemeโ€”a fact known only to her and Rose, excluding the board. Rose suspected Hannah was keeping an eye on Wayne, but couldn't fathom why Hannah had offered to take him along.

โ€œYou can tell him you have the scheme after refusing to give it to him,โ€ Hannah said.

Rose felt utterly lost. Was this a spy movie?

โ€œJust do as I said,โ€ Hannah instructed, offering no explanation. โ€œYou may go.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€ Rose left.

Hannah smiled scornfully, muttering that the Sawyer family would pay double.

Meanwhile, Rose knocked on Wayneโ€™s door.

โ€œCome in.โ€

Rose entered and reported, โ€œMr. Cooper, Ms. Hannah asked me to inform you that you need to accompany her to the bureau for the bidding next week. She just submitted the South Bay New Town construction scheme, and itโ€™s been approved by the board.โ€

โ€œMe?โ€ Wayne was surprised.

โ€œMs. Hannah specified you.โ€

โ€œAre you sure?โ€

โ€œYes, Iโ€™m certain,โ€ Rose replied.

Wayne remained dubious but agreed. โ€œOkay, I see. Let me know the exact time on Monday, and Iโ€™ll go with her.โ€

โ€œYes, sir. If thereโ€™s nothing else, Iโ€™ll be going.โ€

โ€œWait a minute,โ€ Wayne stopped her. โ€œWas the scheme submitted in its original version?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ Rose said, โ€œthere were changes.โ€

โ€œWhat changed?โ€

โ€œMs. Hannah reset a more competitive bidding price,โ€ Rose answered truthfully.

โ€œHow much?โ€ Wayne asked immediately.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry, sir, I canโ€™t tell you. Ms. Hannah considers it confidential business information,โ€ Rose replied. โ€œThe scheme is locked in my safe; I wonโ€™t remove it until Monday.โ€

Wayne pursed his lips, realizing they wouldnโ€™t reveal it. Hannah was clearly watching him, likely taking him along for show rather than for his input in the bidding. Sheโ€™d appeared generous to the senior executives; now, she was fulfilling that promise to avoid gossip. Wayne admitted she was far more clever than heโ€™d initially thought.

โ€œOkay, you may go now,โ€ Wayne dismissed Rose.

After she left, Wayne immediately called Charles. โ€œThe scheme was changed. The sales quota might differ from the one I gave you.โ€

Charles, currently reviewing the scheme, was stunned by Hannahโ€™s South Bay New Town proposal. It was undeniably a cutting-edge concept, a decade ahead of anything else in Northfield! How had Hannah conceived such a modern and pragmatic plan? When had she become so competent, surpassing even him? He was thankful heโ€™d adopted her scheme instead of arrogantly creating his own; otherwise, he would have been utterly defeated.

Hearing Wayneโ€™s words, Charles asked, โ€œHow much is it now?โ€

He knew Hannah wouldnโ€™t easily disclose information; heโ€™d suspected this since Wayne obtained the scheme effortlessly. However, Wayneโ€™s confirmation solidified his belief.

โ€œI have no idea. Only Hannah, her assistant Rose, and the board know,โ€ Wayne answered.

โ€œWhat about trying every means to get it?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s risky. The directors favor those in power. My fatherโ€™s in jail, so they wonโ€™t take me seriously. We might expose ourselves if I ask them for the sales quota now.โ€

โ€œHow about bribing Rose?โ€ Charles suggested.

โ€œImpossible. Rose is loyal to Hannah; she wonโ€™t be bribed.โ€

โ€œThen we steal it.โ€

Wayne was apprehensive. โ€œHow?โ€

โ€œWhere do they keep the final scheme?โ€ Charles asked.

โ€œRose has it. Bribing someone Hannah trusts so much is impossible.โ€

โ€œSteal it from Rose,โ€ Charles said. โ€œWhere do you usually store your schemes?โ€

โ€œWe donโ€™t save them on the computer except for confidential ones, which are downloaded onto a USB and locked in safes.โ€

โ€œDoes Rose have the key?โ€ Charles asked.

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œDoes she carry it everywhere?โ€

โ€œProbably.โ€

โ€œI see. Iโ€™ll get the key, and youโ€™ll get the scheme.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m afraidโ€ฆโ€

โ€œDonโ€™t be afraid!โ€ Charles insisted. โ€œDo as I say, and weโ€™ll succeed.โ€

Wayne hesitated.

โ€œWayne, would you still be promoted to your fatherโ€™s position if Hannah succeeds? If she succeeds, sheโ€™ll remain vice-president. Only if she fails will you have a chance to regain your position.โ€

Wayne gritted his teeth. โ€œOkay, itโ€™s a deal.โ€

โ€œWise choice,โ€ Charles praised. โ€œSneak into Roseโ€™s office to find the safe. Check if the cameras are working; if so, disable them, or youโ€™ll be caught.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll try.โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s start tonight.โ€

โ€œIsnโ€™t that rushed?โ€ Wayne questioned.

โ€œItโ€™s best to resolve this quickly,โ€ Charles asserted.

โ€œFine.โ€

โ€œDo as I said. Call me if you have trouble.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€

Charles hung up and smiled wickedly. He no longer underestimated Hannah; he would defeat her utterly.
