Oscar brought Hannah to his room at Venus's urging. The bedroom, meticulously cleaned, was decorated in his style. A set of decorative items on the bedside tables added a festive, newlywed atmosphere, making Hannah feel genuinely accepted as a daughter-in-law—a stark contrast to her previous experience with Charles's family, who had only welcomed her publicly at the wedding.
The bedroom door closed. Hannah, regaining her composure, looked at Oscar.
“I didn’t sleep well last night, so I need to rest,” he said. “Besides, I’m not used to sleeping with the door open. If you don’t want to stay, you can go chat with my mother; she quite likes you.”
Hannah preferred to stay, relieved that the sham marriage wouldn't immediately strain her relationship with Oscar's family. However, she was also hesitant to be alone with him in the room.
“Oh, by the way,” Oscar said, beginning to undress, “we’ll stay here tonight. My mother said it’s a custom.”
He removed his shirt, revealing his bare torso. Hannah was speechless. Couldn't this man be more reserved? she thought, averting her gaze.
She heard him say calmly, “Tomorrow morning, if everything goes well, we’ll visit your parents.”
The ambiguity of "if everything goes well" unsettled her. Oscar's cryptic nature was nothing new; everything he said seemed to have a hidden meaning.
He went into the cloakroom, changed into pajamas, and lay down on the bed. “My mother prepared your clothes in the cloakroom,” he added. “Change if you like.” He then fell asleep.
Feeling uneasy, Hannah sought distraction. She noticed an open balcony and stepped outside. Oscar seemed to glance at her as she left.
The view confirmed the Wells family's ostentatious lifestyle: a sprawling backyard encompassing a golf course and a horse farm, complete with several stallions in a nearby stable.
Suddenly, Janet appeared on the adjacent balcony, seemingly expecting Hannah's presence. “You’re so pretty,” she said bluntly. “Oscar’s taste never disappoints.”
Hannah knew their relationship was more complicated than it appeared; she suspected Oscar even had a relationship with his sister-in-law. Feeling a surge of anger, she quickly dismissed it as none of her concern.
“You look pretty too,” Hannah replied calmly, avoiding any mention of their earlier argument. Janet possessed a unique, captivating charm, like an elegant cat.
“But I can’t keep him,” Janet sneered.
Hannah remained silent. Janet's expression shifted at Hannah's nonchalance regarding Oscar.
“Is this a sham marriage?” Janet asked.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Hannah replied with a light, elegant smile.
“Never mind,” Janet said amiably. “I’m sleepy. See you later.”
“Okay,” Hannah responded.
Janet paused. “Oscar was my boyfriend. I’m with Thomas now. Don’t get me wrong,” she said before leaving with a smile.
Hannah felt no desire to remain on the balcony. To sow discord between Oscar and me, she thought. She wanted me to misunderstand. So, Janet was the 'someone' Oscar mentioned? She's certainly not easy-going.
Returning to the bedroom, she moved quietly, careful not to wake Oscar. Finding him asleep, she sat on the sofa, examining Karen's gift—a music box. After a moment, she turned off the music, placed it on the bed near Oscar, and opened it, letting the lavender scent fill the room.
While Oscar was a playboy, he hadn't harmed her. She decided to let him sleep peacefully. Returning to the sofa, she used her phone to search for news about her and Oscar's wedding, as Susan had mentioned.
The articles claimed Oscar had turned over a new leaf, highlighting the fact that, despite numerous rumors linking him to other women, he'd never publicly acknowledged a relationship. Now, he was publicly declaring Hannah as his wife. Hannah found the articles ridiculous, believing his main motivation was simply to show off.
