In Destiny's room, a cat's call echoed, but Hannah pretended not to hear.
"Make sure you tell her when Karen has calmed down."
"Yes." Destiny's panic was evident on her face. She likely didn't remember Hannah's words, which was precisely part of Hannah's plan.
Ignoring Destiny's changed expression, Hannah turned and left, silencing the audio to prevent Destiny from suspecting the source of the cat's sound. Destiny, likely still in shock, wouldn't think too deeply about it.
Only after Hannah left did Destiny unleash her grief, tears streaming down her face. She murmured, "Pamela, it wasn't me who wanted to kill you, it wasn't me. Miss Karen was the one who asked me to do it. If you have any grievances, go to her, okay? Don't come to me. I just want to make a living, to keep my job. I need to support my family. I beg you, don't come to me..."
Distraught, she couldn't fully accept that she had drowned Pamela. She had only done as Karen instructedโcarrying the cat's corpse and acting out a scene. Afterward, she locked herself in the room, the image of Pamela's lifeless, wide-eyed stare seared into her mind.
She regretted killing Pamela for her job, a deed that had severely wounded her conscience. The thought of Pamela sent her into a fresh wave of anguish. The cat, raised and cherished like her own child, had been exceptionally close to her, second only to Karen. Yet, she had killed it. She had killed her own "child."
Unable to cope, she hid in her room to compose herself. To her surprise, Hannah returned. Destiny had barely managed to maintain composure when Lily's arrival brought the cat's mournful cry again; now, she heard it again with Hannah present. Initially dismissing it as a hallucination, the sound's reality struck her.
Remembering Hannah's mention of cats possessing spirits, she was terrified. She decided to bury Pamela properly and seek a priest's prayers. This thought spurred her to the door.
Turning, she was startled to find Hannah still there, at the doorway.
...
Hannah had heard Destiny's earlier confession. Trying to appear normal, Destiny asked, "Anything else I can do for you, Miss Hannah?"
"Did Karen ask you to kill Pamela?"
"No!" Destiny vehemently denied it, her agitation palpable. "How could it be? Miss Karen loves Pamela. How could she have killed it? Don't wrong her; she's a good person, kind-hearted. She would never do such a thing..." Her words trailed off.
Hannah produced her phone, the screen displaying Destiny's earlier self-recriminations. Hannah had filmed her.
Destiny stared in disbelief, never suspecting Hannah's actions. She had planned to deny everything, believing Hannah would be powerless without an admission. But the evidence was irrefutable.
"Miss Hannah, please don't tell Mr. and Mrs. Wells. Please don't tell anyone. I don't want to lose this job. I have to raise my younger brother and sister. They won't be able to study if I lose my job. I beg you." She bowed repeatedly.
Hannah lowered her phone, her expression indifferent to Destiny's anguish.
"This isn't your fault. Karen asked you to do this."
"Miss Karen, Miss Karen..." Destiny still tried to defend Karen.
"I know why she did it. You don't need to explain for her. If you want me to help you keep your job, or get generous compensation if you're fired, do as I say, and I promise a smooth exit." Hannah spoke deliberately.
Destiny was somewhat incredulous.
Hannah immediately outlined her plan.
"No, I can't, I can't betray Miss Karen. She's treated me well."
"That's the truth? If I show this video to the Wells family, do you think you can cover anything up? Or you can tell them I forced you to make this video," Hannah said coldly.
Hannah anticipated Destiny lacked the courage to do so. Destiny's self-blame over Pamela's death suggested a good nature, making negotiation feasible.
"Then tell the truth," Hannah kindly urged. "Besides, you're not betraying her, you're helping her. You know it's wrong for her to do this, right?"
Destiny remained silent.
"Karen likes Oscar, don't you think?" Hannah stated directly.
Destiny looked at Hannah in surprise.
