"Believe me, you're helping Karen, but not harming her," Hannah advised again.
Destiny didn't dare to nod, nor did she dare refuse. She simply stared at Hannah, unable to decide.
"Actually, you don't have a choice," Hannah stated. "The fact that you killed Pamela is obvious. First, Pamela didn't slip into the pool and die accidentally. Cats are natural swimmers, even if Pamela lacked the skill due to captivity, she would have made a noise falling in. With twenty-four-hour security at the Wells' residence, the only explanation is that she was killed and then thrown in."
"Secondly, since Pamela didn't drown, it was homicide. The lack of sound or struggle indicates she was killed by someone she trusted. All the servants and family members confirm you were the only person close to Pamela, besides Karen."
"Karen couldn't have done it herself, leaving you," Hannah said bluntly. "That's why I knew from the beginning and why I asked Lily to accompany me—to help you reveal yourself."
Destiny stared, wide-eyed. "So that sound wasn't a hallucination; it was…"
"A recording," Hannah admitted. Destiny had thought she'd hidden it well.
"Of course, my reasoning isn't legally binding. If you're unwilling to betray Karen, I won't force you. However, Northfield has strong pet advocacy laws. Animal abuse carries a penalty of up to three years imprisonment. Pamela should have had a pet ID card. This incident involves pet rights, and prosecution is likely."
"No, I can't go to jail, please!" Destiny cried. "My brother is studying law. A criminal record would ruin his future. I can't get a criminal record, Miss Hannah…"
"That's why you have no choice," Hannah said, unmoved by Destiny's distress. "You shouldn't bear this burden alone, but if you conceal the truth, you will. The best course is to let the truth come out."
"I promise," Destiny nodded, having no option under Hannah's unwavering gaze. Miss Hannah's assessment was reasonable; Karen shouldn't be involved with her stepbrother. She would tell the Wells' the truth.
"Good," Hannah replied, her calm demeanor suggesting she'd anticipated this outcome. Destiny admired Hannah's skill. She'd always considered Karen clever, able to manipulate others. Even Janet Burke had been silenced by Karen's past bullying. But Karen was no match for Hannah. Within the family, no one truly knew Karen except for Destiny, her maid. Yet Hannah had seen through Karen's facade in half a day. Hannah was exceptionally astute.
When Hannah returned to Oscar's room, Venus called. "Hannah, Karen's fine; we're returning soon. The maid said you're home, so…"
"Mom, just come back. Don't worry; I won't let Karen see me."
"Hannah, I made you feel wronged," Venus lamented.
"No, I understand. I'd do the same," Hannah replied.
"Good. I'll handle your relationship with Karen."
"Okay." Venus offered further comfort before hanging up.
Hannah didn't leave, despite promising not to see Karen. She wouldn't leave without exposing Karen's scheme. She lay on the sofa until Oscar entered, surprised to find her there.
"I thought you'd run away," he remarked.
"I thought you wanted me to run, lest I interfere with your family's 'princess'," she retorted sarcastically. Karen had clearly been spoiled by the Wells family.
Lying on the sofa, Hannah reflected on the Wells family. While she hadn't known them well in her previous life, she remembered their genuine affection for each other, except for Karen. It was a stark contrast to the Sawyer family, despite the presence of a similarly troubled Karen.
Then Oscar said, "You've always been my only princess."
