Karen looked profoundly uncomfortable, on the verge of fainting. Normally, her family would have rallied around her, fearing an accident. Instead, they stared in stunned silence.
โI donโt want to see her. Make her go away!โ Karen protested, eyes reddening, her pitiful display a calculated attempt to garner sympathy. She lurched backward, feigning a faint, surprised by their continued stillness.
โWhy are you blaming Hannah?โ Robert exploded, his voice shaking the villa. The outburst shocked everyone, including Karen, momentarily distracting her from her performance. She stared at her father, speechless; this was the first time he'd directed his anger at her. Tears streamed down her face as she exclaimed, โDad, Iโm not framing her! I told you I believe sheโs innocent, but after her argument with Pamela yesterdayโฆ I just thoughtโฆ maybeโฆ I know itโs not Hannah, but I couldn't control my thoughts. Iโm so torn.โ Her forlorn expression was another bid for sympathy.
Hannah watched her act, their realization of Karen's deception palpable.
โYouโre still lying?โ Robertโs voice trembled with rage, his anger reignited by the contrast between Karen's performance and the damning recording. He never imagined his daughter capable of such cruelty, questioning the very foundation of their love and his role in her upbringing.
โI wonโt blame Hannah anymore,โ Karen sobbed. โPamela must have slipped. Iโll go to my room. Itโs all my fault. I caused troubleโฆโ She began to leave, her performance almost believable, were it not for the truth already revealed.
โKaren! You killed Pamela! How long will you pretend?โ Robertโs fury was barely contained.
Karen froze, speechless, unable to process her father's accusation.
โStill feigning ignorance?โ Robert roared, Karen turning to see Destiny trembling, unable to meet her gaze. โDestiny told me everything. How much longer will you lie?โ He was appalled by his daughter's cruelty, her actions a disgrace to the Wells family.
โWhat did she say?โ Karen asked, affecting innocence. Hannah was impressed by Karen's continued performance, even in this desperate situation.
โShe said you ordered her to kill Pamela!โ Robertโs voice cracked with anger.
โDestiny, what did you say?โ Karenโs slightly softer tone was a deliberate attempt to maintain an appearance of composure.
โMiss Karen, Iโm sorry,โ Destiny wept. โI didnโt plan to expose you, but you shouldnโt have even considered itโฆโ
โYou framed me because of a few harsh words last night?โ Karen protested, feigning outrage. โDidn't I treat you well? How can you hate me just because I was unpleasant?โ
โThatโs not it, miss. Everyone knows what you did,โ Destiny replied anxiously. Karen's continued act only grew more repulsive.
โWhat do they know? That I scolded you last night?โ Karen tried to deflect.
โEnough!โ Robert thundered, his patience exhausted. โPlay the recording!โ
Trembling, Destiny played the recording, Karen's carefully constructed facade finally crumbling. Her face drained of color, her carefully laid plansโto deny everything without proof, even accusing Hannah and Destinyโshattered by Destiny's secret recording. Twenty-two years of pretense were undone. The shock was palpable; she was breaking down. Shaking her head, she stumbled backward.
โDonโt you believe it?โ Robert demanded.
The world seemed to darken for Karen. She bit her lip in agony.
โKaren, I raised you, and I cannot believe you are capable of this! The angelic girl I knewโฆ so brutal and cruel! You are an embarrassment!โ Robert's words were raw and unsparing.
Karen was speechless. Venus, though hurt and unable to condone her daughter's actions, felt sympathy for her child. Seeing Robert's harshness, she intervened. โEnough, Robert. Karen must have a reasonโฆโ
โSay it!โ Robert overruled her. โIf you donโt admit everything today, even if you die before me, I wonโt back down!โ
