Karen was completely at a loss. Never had she expected such a public humiliation before her family. Her eyes were red and her body trembled uncontrollably; she bit her lip hard.
Before Venus could speak, Robert roared, "Shut up!" Venus remained silent. At home, she usually controlled the details, but Robert's anger silenced her. She watched Karen, suppressing her sympathy, though anger simmered beneath. She wondered what had driven her daughter to such a heinous act.
"Do you deny it?" Robert's face darkened, his hand rising as if to strike Karen. This spurred David and Thomas to intervene. David pulled Robert back, saying, "Dad, calm down! You're scaring Karen. How can she talk like this?" Thomas agreed, urging Robert to compose himself.
Nancy rushed to Karen's side, helping her stand. "Karen," she said gently, "take your time. You must have your reasons."
Karen felt devastated. She wondered how she would survive this, how they would view her, and how they would treat her. The humiliation was almost unbearable. Hesitation kept her silent, though a desire to harm Hannah, who had ruined everything, raged within.
"Karen!" Robert's anger flared again. He shoved David aside and lunged toward Karen, ready to strike. He was at his breaking point.
Hannah stepped forward, pulling Robert back. "I know why she did it," she said, her voice agitated.
Robert froze, his arm suspended mid-swing. "Don't slap Karen. I'll tell you."
He lowered his hands, glaring at Karen, who gazed coldly at Hannah. Hannah's feigned kindness felt like a betrayal.
"Say it," Robert said, trying to lower his voice.
Hannah looked torn. "Dad, I prefer to tell you alone."
"I want you to say it here, in front of everyone!" Robert insisted.
Hannah turned to Venus. "Mum, I think we should talk privately…"
"We're family! There's nothing to hide!" Robert cut her off. "Just tell us! What reason could she have?"
Hannah hesitated. She didn't care for Karen's pride, having been ridiculed by her, but feared alienating the Wells family by revealing the truth. She also worried about the consequences for Karen; if blamed, it would be disastrous for her.
Seeing Robert's insistence, she finally spoke. "She likes Oscar."
The revelation stunned everyone. Its impact rivaled Karen's crime. Karen's face drained of color. She glared at Destiny, her closest maid, suspecting betrayal.
Destiny immediately denied any involvement. "Miss Karen, I said nothing! Miss Hannah knows."
"Get out! I never want to see you again!" Karen screamed, her pretense dissolving.
Her outburst shocked everyone, confirming their negative impressions of her.
Destiny, crying, tried to explain. "Miss Karen, you're siblings! I wanted to tell you, but feared your anger. I wanted to tell Mr. and Mrs. Wells, too, but was afraid of hurting you. I agree with Miss Hannah. We must stop this before it destroys you…"
"Shut up!" Karen screamed, pointing at Destiny. "When did I fall for my brother? My feelings are siblingly! You and Hannah are cold-hearted and disgusting! You twisted my words! Do you want to see me die?"
Destiny pleaded with her. "Miss Karen, you don't have to go through this alone. The family will help you. Please stop this…"
Karen accused Hannah and Destiny of conspiring against her, adamant that she did not love Oscar. She would take others down with her if she went to hell.
