Chapter 314: Aurora

The soft knock on the door drew my attention from the maps spread across the table. โ€œCome in,โ€ I said, my voice even, though unease churned in my chest.

The door creaked open, and Piper stepped inside, her face pale, her shoulders tight. Immediately, I knew something was wrong.

โ€œPiper,โ€ I began, rising. โ€œWhat is it?โ€

She hesitated, holding a folded paper tightly. โ€œI found this,โ€ she whispered. โ€œIt was hidden in the cache we dug up. I thinkโ€ฆ I think itโ€™s some sort of code.โ€

My heart quickened with excitement as I took the paper. The symbols were strange, yet somehow familiar. My fingers shook slightly with a mixture of fear and something else as I turned it over.

โ€œWhatโ€™s it say?โ€ I asked, my tone sharper than intended.

โ€œIโ€™m not entirely sure,โ€ Piper admitted. โ€œBut it mentions someone inside the pack. Someone close.โ€

The weight of her words landed like a boulder. โ€œA spyโ€ฆ I know, but who?โ€ I murmured. โ€œThat could unravel everything.โ€ I paced, my mind racing. โ€œWe have to move fast. If thereโ€™s a traitor, Orionโ€™s forces could already know our plans.โ€

Piper nodded, her jaw set. โ€œWhat do we do?โ€

โ€œRowan,โ€ I said. โ€œHeโ€™s worked with Callaโ€™s network. Heโ€™ll know these codes faster than anyone.โ€

I nodded at Piper, and she rushed out, returning soon after with Rowan. Then Warrick burst in, looking stormy. โ€œLuna,โ€ he said, casting a dark look at Piper. โ€œWe need to talk.โ€

I think heโ€™d seen Piper and Rowan and was agitated, but I couldnโ€™t deal with it now. โ€œWarrick, not now,โ€ I said, my patience snapping, as I took my seat.

โ€œItโ€™s about them,โ€ he insisted, nodding toward Piper and Rowan.

I sighed, rubbing my temples. If I didnโ€™t listen, he wouldnโ€™t let me work. I looked at Rowan, who glared back at Warrick. Rowan couldnโ€™t be here for this.

โ€œVery well. Rowan, attend to something else. Piper and Warrick, stay.โ€

Rowan hesitated, his eyes flicking to Piper, but he nodded and went out.

As soon as they left, Warrick approached. โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Lunaโ€ฆ but I just canโ€™t stand seeing them together.โ€

Piper grunted. โ€œI donโ€™t know your problem; we were working. We need Rowanโ€™s helpโ€ฆโ€

โ€œI would help you,โ€ Warrick said, turning to her.

I spread the coded paper across the table, pulling out old cipher books. โ€œFine then, figure this out first,โ€ I said firmly.

Piper sat on my desk, frowning in concentration. Warrick sat beside her, his eyes sometimes straying to her.

As our work paused, I heard Piper whisper, โ€œWhat if we canโ€™t stop this? What if it all falls down?โ€

Warrick leaned in, his voice low. โ€œIt wonโ€™t. Youโ€™re stronger than you think, Piper. The pack is stronger than you think.โ€

Their eyes met, and for an instant, the tension loosened. Warrick moved as if to kiss her forehead, but she turned away, her voice abruptly brisk. โ€œWe should get back to work.โ€

I watched in silence, disappointed, but said nothing.

Finally, Warrick gasped, his finger hovering over symbols. โ€œWaitโ€ฆ this matches!โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ I leaned in, my heart pounding.

He flipped through a cipher book, aligning the symbols. โ€œHere. Itโ€™s a name. Itโ€™sโ€ฆโ€ He trailed off, his face paling.

โ€œWho is it?โ€ I pressed, dread tightening my stomach. Piper looked up, fear in her eyes.

I shook my head, snatching the papers. I couldnโ€™t bear the suspense.

โ€œWhat?โ€ I whispered as the papers slipped from my hand. Warrick quickly rearranged them.

โ€œNoโ€ฆ this canโ€™t beโ€ฆ heโ€™s my own bloodโ€ฆ It canโ€™t be him,โ€ I got up and stormed out, heading to my room.

โ€œAurora?โ€ Piper called, but I ignored her. I didnโ€™t stop until I reached my room and slammed the door shut.

โ€œBaby,โ€ I heard Daneโ€™s voice, and I quickly wiped away my tears and sniffed before turning to him.

โ€œYes?โ€ I said, feigning a smile.

He narrowed his gaze, shifting to sit on the bed. I rushed to help him, placing a pillow behind his back.

โ€œAre youโ€ฆ crying?โ€ he asked.

I looked down and shook my head. โ€œNoโ€ฆ why would I cry? Iโ€™m okay,โ€ I lied.

He sighed, his shoulders slumping. โ€œItโ€™s my body thatโ€™s weak, not my heartโ€ฆ I can tell when youโ€™re not okay from afar.โ€

He cupped my face. โ€œAuroraโ€ฆ tell me the problem.โ€

โ€œA spyโ€ฆ an insider feeding Orionโ€™s men information, Dane.โ€

Dane breathed out. โ€œI thought as muchโ€ฆ Is there someone you suspect?โ€

I kept silent, looking away. Dane took my hand, making me face him.

โ€œI think you know this personโ€ฆ Am I right?โ€ Dane asked.

I nodded. He continued, โ€œAnd heโ€™s not who you expected? Someone you trusted?โ€

I nodded again, tears forming. Dane gently wiped them away with his thumb.

โ€œRowan? Warrick? Evelyn? Piper? Trajan? Joclyn? Me?โ€ Dane listed, and I remained silent, pressing my eyes shut.

โ€œThereโ€™s still one you havenโ€™t mentioned,โ€ I said.

โ€œWho?โ€ Dane asked, raising an eyebrow.

I locked eyes with him. โ€œEvander.โ€
