Chapter 314: Aurora
The soft knock on the door drew my attention from the maps spread across the table. โCome in,โ I said, my voice even, though unease churned in my chest.
The door creaked open, and Piper stepped inside, her face pale, her shoulders tight. Immediately, I knew something was wrong.
โPiper,โ I began, rising. โWhat is it?โ
She hesitated, holding a folded paper tightly. โI found this,โ she whispered. โIt was hidden in the cache we dug up. I thinkโฆ I think itโs some sort of code.โ
My heart quickened with excitement as I took the paper. The symbols were strange, yet somehow familiar. My fingers shook slightly with a mixture of fear and something else as I turned it over.
โWhatโs it say?โ I asked, my tone sharper than intended.
โIโm not entirely sure,โ Piper admitted. โBut it mentions someone inside the pack. Someone close.โ
The weight of her words landed like a boulder. โA spyโฆ I know, but who?โ I murmured. โThat could unravel everything.โ I paced, my mind racing. โWe have to move fast. If thereโs a traitor, Orionโs forces could already know our plans.โ
Piper nodded, her jaw set. โWhat do we do?โ
โRowan,โ I said. โHeโs worked with Callaโs network. Heโll know these codes faster than anyone.โ
I nodded at Piper, and she rushed out, returning soon after with Rowan. Then Warrick burst in, looking stormy. โLuna,โ he said, casting a dark look at Piper. โWe need to talk.โ
I think heโd seen Piper and Rowan and was agitated, but I couldnโt deal with it now. โWarrick, not now,โ I said, my patience snapping, as I took my seat.
โItโs about them,โ he insisted, nodding toward Piper and Rowan.
I sighed, rubbing my temples. If I didnโt listen, he wouldnโt let me work. I looked at Rowan, who glared back at Warrick. Rowan couldnโt be here for this.
โVery well. Rowan, attend to something else. Piper and Warrick, stay.โ
Rowan hesitated, his eyes flicking to Piper, but he nodded and went out.
As soon as they left, Warrick approached. โIโm sorry, Lunaโฆ but I just canโt stand seeing them together.โ
Piper grunted. โI donโt know your problem; we were working. We need Rowanโs helpโฆโ
โI would help you,โ Warrick said, turning to her.
I spread the coded paper across the table, pulling out old cipher books. โFine then, figure this out first,โ I said firmly.
Piper sat on my desk, frowning in concentration. Warrick sat beside her, his eyes sometimes straying to her.
As our work paused, I heard Piper whisper, โWhat if we canโt stop this? What if it all falls down?โ
Warrick leaned in, his voice low. โIt wonโt. Youโre stronger than you think, Piper. The pack is stronger than you think.โ
Their eyes met, and for an instant, the tension loosened. Warrick moved as if to kiss her forehead, but she turned away, her voice abruptly brisk. โWe should get back to work.โ
I watched in silence, disappointed, but said nothing.
Finally, Warrick gasped, his finger hovering over symbols. โWaitโฆ this matches!โ
โWhat?โ I leaned in, my heart pounding.
He flipped through a cipher book, aligning the symbols. โHere. Itโs a name. Itโsโฆโ He trailed off, his face paling.
โWho is it?โ I pressed, dread tightening my stomach. Piper looked up, fear in her eyes.
I shook my head, snatching the papers. I couldnโt bear the suspense.
โWhat?โ I whispered as the papers slipped from my hand. Warrick quickly rearranged them.
โNoโฆ this canโt beโฆ heโs my own bloodโฆ It canโt be him,โ I got up and stormed out, heading to my room.
โAurora?โ Piper called, but I ignored her. I didnโt stop until I reached my room and slammed the door shut.
โBaby,โ I heard Daneโs voice, and I quickly wiped away my tears and sniffed before turning to him.
โYes?โ I said, feigning a smile.
He narrowed his gaze, shifting to sit on the bed. I rushed to help him, placing a pillow behind his back.
โAre youโฆ crying?โ he asked.
I looked down and shook my head. โNoโฆ why would I cry? Iโm okay,โ I lied.
He sighed, his shoulders slumping. โItโs my body thatโs weak, not my heartโฆ I can tell when youโre not okay from afar.โ
He cupped my face. โAuroraโฆ tell me the problem.โ
โA spyโฆ an insider feeding Orionโs men information, Dane.โ
Dane breathed out. โI thought as muchโฆ Is there someone you suspect?โ
I kept silent, looking away. Dane took my hand, making me face him.
โI think you know this personโฆ Am I right?โ Dane asked.
I nodded. He continued, โAnd heโs not who you expected? Someone you trusted?โ
I nodded again, tears forming. Dane gently wiped them away with his thumb.
โRowan? Warrick? Evelyn? Piper? Trajan? Joclyn? Me?โ Dane listed, and I remained silent, pressing my eyes shut.
โThereโs still one you havenโt mentioned,โ I said.
โWho?โ Dane asked, raising an eyebrow.
I locked eyes with him. โEvander.โ
