Chapter 351
Dane
โSo what do you think about the interiors?โ I asked Aurora, smiling as we headed toward the elevator.
โDane!!โ
I stopped, hearing Aurora scream my name. โAurora!!โ I called out, seeing her far behind, tripping on a pool of water. How was she there? I thought she was right behind me.
I raced to her, catching her by the wrist as she was about to hit the ground. I pulled her close, and we stumbled on the slippery floor. Instinctively, I wrapped my arm around her, holding her tightly and shielding her head.
We rolled over, and I used my body to shield her, my shoulder hitting the ground. I groaned in pain. She stopped falling, and I stayed frozen with her for a moment. She shifted, and I released her, cupping her face. โAre you alright?โ
She stood, shaken and silent, her wide eyes blinking rapidly. Her flushed cheeks and reddened ears made it clear she was terrified.
I stood and helped her to her feet, pulling her into a tight embrace. Gently running my hand through her hair, I whispered, โYouโre okayโฆ youโre safeโฆโ
She broke free from the hug and looked at me. โThank you, Dane.โ
She looked around at the onlookers, who began to disperse, but Aurora seemed to be searching for something.
โWhat are you looking for?โ I looked at the ground, trying to see what she might have dropped. โDid you lose something?โ
She shook her head and pointed to the spot where we tripped. โWhere is he?โ
I furrowed my brows, looking around. โWho?โ
โThe cleaner.โ
I shook my head. โI donโt knowโฆ letโs go.โ I took her hand, holding it tightly this time, preventing her from falling again.
We got into the elevator, but Aurora seemed preoccupied. I chose to let it go; maybe it was just the shock of the fall.
Chapter 351
The elevator chimed, and we stepped out, arriving at room 100. I swiped my key card, and we went inside.
Aurora sat on the bed, resting her head on her arms. I stood by the door, watching her with worry.
โAurora?โ I called. She turned, her face blank. โIs something on your mind?โ
She nodded and smiled. โBut donโt worry, I know the moon goddess will help me figure this out.โ
โWow,โ I said, walking toward her. โWhy trouble the moon goddess when Iโm here?โ I sat beside her, holding her shoulders and giving her a gentle massage.
She stood up suddenly. โDane, you wonโt understand. I just want you to trust meโฆ I will tell you when the time is right.โ
I gritted my teeth as I watched her pace the room. Her agitation was unsettling, and while I didnโt want to bother her, I knew she wouldn't tell me even if I pressed her.
Chapter 351
I rested my chin on my palm, my gaze fixed on her. I had planned a special dinner for her, but ever since I saw her this morning at the hospital cottage, something about her behavior had felt offโdistant, almost strange.
โMaybe I made a mistake?โ I blurted out, and she turned to me.
Her eyes softened as she approached. โHoneyโฆ this isnโt about you, okay? I just need to get some work doneโฆ and I wish I could tell you, but I canโtโฆ unfortunately.โ
What work was she talking about? Was it related to her conversation with Miles?
I bit my lip. โYou donโt trust me enough to tell me.โ
She shook her head softly. โDane, youโre the one I trust most in this world.โ
โBut does anyone else know about this thing that I donโt?โ
She paused, licking her lip, her eyes scanning the room. I recognized that expressionโshe didnโt want to tell me the truth, probably to avoid hurting my feelings, but I felt hurt already.
โI see you donโt want to replyโฆ that means other people know about this so-called secret work, and the person you trust most in this world has no idea.โ
She shook her head. โItโs not like that, Daneโฆ I said I will tell you when the time is right.โ
I stared into her eyes and asked, โDoes Miles know about this?โ
She blinked, her eyes dimming in a way I understood. I smiled at her.
โWowโฆ Lunaโฆ you seem to have other better acquaintances, huhโฆ your Alpha is no longer your friend, huh?โ
I bit my lip, feeling a pang of jealousy. It hurt to know Aurora was keeping something from me, and others knew about itโฆ I thought I should be the first to know about everything in her life.
โI shouldnโt have bothered bringing you here. I shouldnโt have interrupted you with a date when your work is clearly more important,โ I said, emphasizing the word โyour.โ She seemed preoccupied with her own priorities now, anyway.
Aurora sighed and reached for my hand, but I stood up and began taking off my suit. I placed it in the wardrobe and removed my shirt, leaving only my pants on. I felt hot, even with the AC on; maybe it was the anger I was trying to suppress. I knew she was stressed, but this was unacceptable to me.
I picked up the phone. โHelloโฆ cancel the order, the date is cancelledโฆ just bring a single-course meal for my wife; Iโve lost my appetite.โ
I hung up after cancelling the order. Iโd arranged for waiters to set up a romantic table for us in the room, but it was pointless now.
I crawled onto the bed, avoiding Auroraโs piercing gaze. I wasnโt going to fall for her puppy-dog eyes now.
โGood night,โ I growled, closing my eyes.
