Run, Girl (If You Can)-Chapter 346: Am I Awesome Or Am I Awesome?

Listen to this chapter:

Aaron was drafting a contract when Aiden burst into his office without knocking, as usual. This time, however, the door swung open with such force that it slammed against the wall, making Aaron look up in surprise.

Aiden was flushed and out of breathโ€”unusual for him. Even when urgent, he typically strolled in with an air of nonchalance.

"What is it?" Aaron asked flatly.

"I nailed him! I have proof that Graydon Meyer murdered Lacy."

Aaron's interest piqued. "I would have thought he'd cover his tracks better. Did you find something the police could feasibly find on their own?"

The hacker nodded, flopping onto the couch with an exhausted sigh. "Man, I shouldn't have run up here. I'm really out of shape."

"You wouldn't be so winded if you did anything other than play video games," Aaron pointed out. "But that's irrelevant. Get on with it."

"Right," Aiden said, launching into a lengthy explanation of hacking details that Aaron largely ignored. He needed to assess whether the evidence was easily accessible to the police. If not, their plan would be ruined. Thankfully, it seemed to involve simple research and readily available surveillance footage.

"โ€ฆlong story short, I found a hidden dash cam in the cab Lacy and the 'sunglasses guy' were in. The footage is stored at Taxi Star's main office. I had to do some shady hacking to access it, but all the police need is a warrant.

"At one point, Lacy briefly pulls off the sunglasses, revealing Meyer's face before he replaces them. The driver probably didn't notice, but the camera did," Aiden finished smugly. "Am I awesome, or am I awesome?"

This proved Gray was lying about his last sighting of Lacy and his claim that he'd taken her to the Bronxโ€”fairly compelling evidence, though Aaron wasn't sure it guaranteed a conviction.

Lying to the police was a misdemeanor, carrying minor charges Gray could easily dismiss due to his wealth. However, in a murder investigation, it would negate his alibi and prompt further scrutiny.

Was it worth the risk? Aaron doubted his half-brother could trace the information back to him if Aiden submitted an anonymous tip about the video footage and Harry Ramone's dash cam. The outcome would then be up to the courts.

He needed to discuss this with Keeley. Initially, he hadn't cared about Gray getting away with murder, largely due to his hatred of the victim. But Gray's abnormal interest in him and his familyโ€ฆcould he really continue appeasing a murderer?

"Good work, Aiden. Let me explain the situation to Keeley and see if she wants to proceed," he said.

Aiden, lying on his back, was obscured by the couch, but he raised his arm to give his boss a thumbs-up.

Aaron contacted Keeley. He felt nervous, but his anxiety eased when he saw her contact photoโ€”from her PhD graduation, showing a radiant smile. Her happiness was infectious.

"Aaron? What's up? I was just reading to the twins," Keeley said.

"Aiden found evidence that might convict Gray, but I'm not sure it's enough. Do you still want to proceed?"

"Oh? What evidence?"

"Footage of Gray in a cab with Lacy, headed to the Bronx," Aaron said grimly. "He really did kill her."

"That seems pretty solid, but I don't know much about law enforcement. As long as it's untraceable to you or Aiden, I say go for it."

Her answer was expected, but he was glad he'd sought her opinion. It reflected their strong relationship. He'd promised no more secrets or solo actions, and he'd meant it.

"That's what I thought. I'll get on it. Hug the babies for me. See you in a few hours. Love you."

"Love you too!" she said before hanging up.

Would Aaron ever tire of hearing that? Probably not.

"So, yes or no?" Aiden asked.

"Yes. Use a public payphone without security cameras, or disguise yourself when submitting the tip. Gray's a hacker, too, though I don't know how skilled. We need a low-tech approach."

Was he missing anything? All bases needed covering. If Gray weren't a hacker, he'd have Aiden email the information, but that wouldn't work. They had to use old-fashioned methods.

Brann Knighton's reward could also be a problem. If Gray learned it was refused by an anonymous tipster, that might be suspicious. And since Gray had investigated Aaron's associates, Aiden couldn't claim the reward.

They could pay someone else, but that might be dangerous. Planning would be easier if Aaron knew the extent of Gray's access to the city's network. Gray had human sources everywhere, but did his omniscience extend to surveillance footage like Aiden's?
