Chapter 541: A Car Accident
Meryl had breakfast alone at home. Just as she finished cleaning up, her phone rang.
It was Yancey.
โSomethingโs happened to Anne!โ he said, his voice hurried.
Merylโs heart raced. โWhatโs wrong?โ
โItโs complicated. Just get to the hospital now! She might be going into labor!โ Yancey urged, panic evident in his tone.
In the background, Meryl could faintly hear Dante calling for an ambulance.
Merylโs heart sank. She realized Anne had gone to meet Dante.
How serious could it be for them to call an ambulance?
She quickly slipped on her shoes and grabbed the hospital bag Yancey had packed earlier.
When Meryl arrived at the hospital, Anne was already in the delivery room.
Yanceyโs white T-shirt was smeared with blood, sending a jolt of fear through Meryl.
โWhatโs going on?โ she asked.
She had a bad feeling. Why was there so much blood? Panic began to set in.
Dante was there, too, his hands stained with blood. He stood with his head down, looking remorseful.
Meryl realized that whatever had happened was tied to Dante.
โWhen I got there, Anne was already on the ground, covered in blood,โ Yancey said, his voice shaky.
His eyes were red, and the usually gentle man glared at Dante with hostility. โAsk him. I want to know too.โ
Meryl turned to Dante, her eyes searching his. โWhat happened?โ
Dante looked frustrated, struggling to explain.
โThis morning, he and Anne had met at a cafรฉ. Their conversation started off with Chandler and Rachel, but then Anne brought up Lola.
โIs Rachel just like Lola, throwing herself at men?โ Anne had asked.
Given how Lola had destroyed her own marriage, it was natural for Anne to think of Rachel in the same light.
The conversation had taken a turn.
Then, Dante retorted, โWhat about you, Anne? You slept with another man and got pregnant. While we were married, you hadโฆโ
Since Anne was over eight months pregnant, her belly was pronounced. It was summer, and her clothes couldnโt conceal it.
Dante felt upset and couldnโt help but speak harshly.
To this day, he still couldnโt bring himself to accept that Anne had slept with another man.
It was a humiliation for Dante that Anne came to see him with pregnancy.
Unexpectedly, Anne, annoyed, splashed the water on Danteโs face.
She snapped, โYou stomped on my heart first! Even if I slept with someone else and got pregnant, you have to accept it!โ
With that, she stormed out, bag in hand.
Dante asked Anne to meet up for his own selfish reasons.
He wanted to see her but couldnโt come up with a good excuse. He didnโt expect them to have a fight.
Dante went after her, as he still loved Anne.
But just a few steps out of the cafe, she was hit by a car.
Seeing her lying on the ground covered in blood, Dante froze, and his mind went blank.
