Chapter 546 Whoโs the Father
โThe patient is still in observation. She wonโt be out for at least half an hour. Sheโs doing fine, but her lower limbs appear to be partially fractured. Sheโll need some time to recover,โ the nurse explained.
Upon hearing this, Dante finally sighed in relief. His gaze suddenly fell on the baby in the nurseโs arms. It was Anneโs child.
โWhoโs the babyโs father? The baby was born a month premature and has aspiration pneumonia. Itโll be transferred to the neonatal unit soon. We need the father to sign,โ the nurse said.
The baby looked so tiny. As it slept, its eyes were tightly shut, yet it was easy to see that it bore a resemblance to Anne.
When Meryl heard that Anne was fine, she was also relieved. It was just a fracture, and she would be fine after some rest. Thank goodness! However, when Meryl saw the child in the nurseโs arms, her heart skipped a beat. The child looked just like Dante.
Meryl instinctively glanced at Dante. He was looking down at the baby, seemingly oblivious to the resemblance. Meryl felt relieved, but Chandler was starting to piece things together.
He frowned and kept glancing back and forth between the baby and Dante. Dante might not have noticed, but Chandler could see right away that the child was Danteโs. He remembered that Anne had claimed to have had an abortion and Dante had insisted that Anne was pregnant with Yanceyโs child. Now, he realized Anne had lied.
The nurse was asking the babyโs father to sign, and Meryl started to worry about Dante finding out the truth. She quickly nudged Yancey.
Yancey took the hint and promptly replied, โIโll sign.โ He then followed the nurse inside.
Before they left, the nurse shot Dante a curious look and whispered, โIs he the childโs uncle? Itโs just that the baby looks a bit like him.โ
The nurse spoke in a low tone, but Yancey, standing closest, picked it up, and Meryl heard it too.
Yancey grabbed the nurse and hurried away. As the two left, Meryl kept a close eye on Danteโs expression.
Unexpectedly, Dante turned to Chandler and asked, โHow long was the baby premature?โ
Meryl panicked, hoping that Chandler hadnโt caught it.
Chandler met Danteโs gaze. โOne month.โ
Meryl knew there was no hiding it any longer. As expected, Dante stumbled slightly, his eyes flickering with a whirlwind of emotions. In an instant, his expression changed drastically.
Dante suddenly grasped Merylโs shoulders, questioning, โTell me, whose child is Anneโs? Itโs mine, right? She didnโt have an abortion, did she?โ
Dante was clearly overwhelmed. He shook Meryl, searching for a confirmation that the child was indeed his.
Meryl found herself torn. Anne had made it clear she didnโt want Dante to know about the baby. She had resolved to raise the child without him. But no one could have anticipated that the newborn would resemble Dante so closely.
Meryl understood that the truth would come out sooner or later. The nurse had mentioned that the baby was a month premature, and if she hadnโt brought it up, it might have been easier to keep it hidden. But since Dante had heard it, he could easily find out that the child was his.
Still, Meryl remained silent.
