Lydia quickly jumped to Malcolm’s defense. “Mom, please calm down. Dad and Meryl were just fooling around. It wasn’t serious. Meryl isn’t hurt. Why should we make such a scene as a family?”
Bianca scoffed, “Sure, Meryl’s not hurt now. But if she had been harmed even slightly, Malcolm wouldn’t be standing here so casually.”
Malcolm tried to smooth things over with Bianca, swallowing his pride. “Honey, our son’s graduating and coming home soon. He’ll be looking for a wife before we know it. Shouldn’t we keep the peace in the family? Can’t you let me off the hook just this once?”
Bianca shot him a cold look before turning to Meryl. “Fine. Then apologize to Meryl.”
Malcolm, being a man in his fifties, found it hard to swallow his pride and apologize to someone younger. But under Bianca’s pressure, he decided to pacify her first.
He approached Meryl, keeping his manner reasonably civil. “Meryl, you know your dad has a terrible temper. I tend to lose my cool at the slightest thing. I was wrong today. I acted too rashly. Can you forgive your dad?”

Malcolm’s apology seemed genuinely sincere. Several months ago, being thrown out of the house had left quite an impression on him. With the weather getting colder, if he got kicked out again, he wouldn’t even be able to enjoy Christmas properly.
“Meryl,” Lydia pleaded, “Dad’s already humbled himself so much. Can’t you just let it go?”
Malcolm was touched by how Lydia seemed to feel about his situation. Indeed, his sweet daughter’s affection hadn’t been misplaced.
Meryl couldn’t stand watching their performance anymore. Without another word, she turned towards the stairs. “I’m tired. I’m going up to rest.”
No one dared stop her.
Malcolm turned hopefully to Bianca. “Honey, does this mean Meryl’s forgiven me? Can I keep sleeping on your room’s floor?”
Bianca just snorted, saying nothing.
Malcolm took her silence as agreement and hurried outside to collect his clothes that the maid had thrown out earlier.

Lydia kept following behind Malcolm. She quietly wiped away a tear, putting on a show of distress.

“Dad, you’re living so miserably here. How can Mom treat you like this?”
Malcolm was all too aware of how humiliating his current situation was. He let out a heavy sigh. From being the head of the household to now being under Bianca’s thumb – Malcolm had struggled with this reality. But it didn’t matter anymore. As long as the company was doing well, he could live with being humbled at home. At least he could still hold his head high in public.
Lydia leaned closer to Malcolm and whispered, “Mom says she loves you deeply, and she’ll wait for you forever, even if you never see her again.”
Malcolm froze, startled. “You went to see your mom in secret?”

Malcolm fell silent for a moment. He didn’t have genuine feelings for Sandra. He’d only been with her because she was gentle and understood men’s needs better than Bianca.
But with Bianca watching him like a hawk now, Malcolm didn’t dare fool around with Sandra anymore! Bianca had forgiven his first offense, but if he got caught a second time, there’d be no wiggle room.
