Chapter 7

That evening, I went to the living room for water and overheard another conversation between Azazel and his parents.

“Mom, we absolutely cannot let Sylvia terminate this pregnancy,” Azazel insisted.

I paused, listening as he continued: “I have a low sperm count, and Rebecca’s health is poor—she can’t handle a pregnancy. With Alaric gone, this might be the only child I’ll ever have… If Sylvia terminates, won’t our family line truly end with us?”

“If she doesn’t want to raise it, Rebecca can. She’s always wanted a child but couldn’t have one due to her health issues. She’s gentle and kind—she would genuinely love this child.”

Christine sighed heavily. “I don’t want our family line to end either. But Sylvia not only wants to terminate the pregnancy, she wants to remarry… You know how our company’s growth depends on her father’s support. If she insists, we can’t stop her.”

Before she finished, Richard cut in reprovingly: “If Sylvia terminates and remarries, she’ll have no connection to our family, and her father won’t support us anymore. I told you to agree to the two-family marriage arrangement—we could have kept Sylvia and the child. You refused, and now look at this mess. What do we do?”

Azazel wasn’t worried. He snorted dismissively, his tone certain: “Come on, you think she’s serious about terminating and remarrying? She loves me so much that without this baby, she would have committed suicide already. This child is her emotional anchor—how could she bear to terminate it?”

“As for remarrying…” he scoffed, “she’s just saying that to spite us. Her heart has no room for anyone but me. Don’t worry—she won’t remarry. She’ll have this child and remain part of our family forever.”

Listening to Azazel’s confident assertions, I couldn’t help but laugh bitterly to myself.
