Chapter 82: Mr. Zamora's Slyness
Having identified the snake that bit Mr. Foley, obtaining the correct antivenom became the priority. During the infusion, a young nurse began to administer the injection. Eddie removed his gloves and stepped forward.
Taking the syringe, he smiled warmly and said, "Mr. Foley is an esteemed patient. I'll handle this."
The nurse blushed and stepped aside. Less experienced than Eddie, she watched.
Eddie squinted, filling the syringe. Only then did he examine Kelvin's arm to find a vein. He grasped the arm firmly, and with a forceful injection, the needle pierced the muscle.
"Apologies, Mr. Foley," he said, "I seem to have administered the wrong injection. This medication, injected into the muscle, could cause a tumor."
He quickly withdrew the needle, replacing it with a larger one.
"Mr. Zamora, that needle…" the nurse began, but trailed off.
Eddie offered a gentle smile. The nurse blushed and stammered, speechless.
Chris, standing in the doorway, observed the young doctor with his dark, intense gaze. He'd just learned that Dr. Zamora was a returned scholar and professor at the National Biomedical Institute.
How could he make such a fundamental mistake? Chris's suspicion was evident; Kelvin, too, seemed to notice something amiss. Kelvin's sharp gaze fixed on Eddie, who maintained a faint, harmless smile. He appeared scholarly and weak.
"I won't bother with him," Kelvin thought.
After his IV treatment, Kelvin checked the time: after three in the afternoon. He'd visited the Todd family and hadn't yet been to work. He left with his assistant.
Meanwhile, Eddie collected medical waste, muttering, "Why does Cheyenne like him? He's so icy."
That evening, the Todd mansion glowed brightly. European-style wallpaper with embossed floral patterns adorned the luxurious, Louis XV-style furniture. Kai, in a black checkered bathrobe, sat under a lamp, reviewing documents. Thick reading glasses perched on his nose.
A striking figure entered—a vibrant red silk slip dress, loose curls framing her shoulders. She elegantly approached, wrapping her arms around Kai's neck, nuzzling him playfully. The scent of her perfume filled the air.
Kai could no longer concentrate. He pulled her into his embrace.
She giggled. "Honey, what are you looking at?"
He rubbed his temples. "Just something from this morning."
Miss Lawrence, a guest delivering medicine to Iker, had been bitten by a snake at the Todd mansion. Kai was seeking compensation for the Todds' negligence.
Erica's eyes gleamed when the incident was mentioned. She whispered, "Honey, it's strange how that snake escaped its box, don't you think?"
"We discussed this; the servants were negligent," Kai replied, feeling uneasy.
Erica continued, "You probably don't know, but yesterday Miss Lawrence caught a maid trying to poison Iker's food."
Kai slammed his hand on the table, jarring the lamp. In the momentary darkness, Erica's face was obscured.
"What! That maid is so bold!" he growled.
"Honey, don't be angry. But who benefits from Iker's death?" she prompted, subtly suggesting Kai's second wife and son.
Kai frowned. He knew his wife and his second wife didn't get along, but he'd been married to Thalia for years and understood her well. He didn't want Erica involved in this. He remembered her as a sweet, obedient girl, a stark contrast to her current behavior.
His romantic thoughts evaporated.
He withdrew, looking at her seriously. "I have things to do. If you're finished, check on the children."
Erica, sensing his displeasure, smiled gently. "Okay, honey. You rest early, too."
Returning to her room, Erica sat on the bed, arms crossed. The nanny approached.
"What's wrong?" the nanny asked, trembling. "Master Lewis has a high fever and won't stop crying."
The nanny handed the child to Erica, increasing his distress.
"What's the point of crying?" Erica snapped. "Take him to the hospital! I'm not a doctor!"
She angrily covered his mouth, hindering his breathing. His face turned red. Kai watched, his anger rising.
