Chapter 86: Catching the Snake
Cheyenne put down her cutlery, her expression turning serious. "Eddie, do you have any specific information about the deceased?"
Eddie nodded, handing Cheyenne a sheet of paper containing the patient's basic information: Sergio Mullen, male, 34 years old, an ordinary taxi driver. He was originally from Yrose but had lived in Akloit for almost ten years. He divorced three years ago and has a daughter who lives with his ex-wife. His background appeared unremarkable at first glance.
"This person's background seems unproblematic. I'll need Omari's help with the investigation," Cheyenne said.
"Yeah, this car accident isn't simple. There's three million dollars in his bank account!" Eddie replied. This sum might be insignificant to them, but it would be a fortune for someone like Sergio.
"His ex-wife brought their daughter here, claiming the money should belong to her," Cheyenne continued. However, the divorce decree awarded custody to the wife, with Sergio only obligated to pay child support. His parents, however, believe the money should fund their retirement.
Cheyenne smiled. "That's easy then! Omari's our best bet!" Omari, a world-renowned lawyer, would surely find such a small case simple.
She remained at the hospital for two days. During that time, Layne treated Iker instead. Feeling guilty, Kai and Thalia brought Layne numerous supplements as an apology. Layne remained unmoved by their status, coldly replying, "I don't need these, Mr. Todd."
Thalia's smile faltered; she didn't know whether to keep the gift box. Iker, surprisingly, suggested, "If you truly wish to apologize, kill that snake and make soup with it."
The snake was Davon's prized pet, fed New Zealand lean beef. Iker's suggestion caused Thalia to glance at Davon, whose face flushed with anger. He trembled slightly, saying, "We apologize for the snake biting Miss Lawrence. I'll apologize personally."
"Master Davon, you're too polite; I simply require the snake," Layne replied firmly, his sharp eyes fixed on Davon.
Sensing rising tension, Adrian whispered to Davon, who, after hesitating, agreed. A servant soon arrived carrying a glass box covered with a red cloth. The box was placed on the table.
"Old Mr. Edwards, I deeply regret my oversight, causing Miss Lawrence harm. I sincerely apologize," Davon said, lifting the cloth. A bright red snake hissed, its triangular head raised, its vertical pupils fixed on Layne with apparent greed. Though small, its venom was potent.
Layne, a seasoned physician, knew of snake bile's medicinal uses. To everyone's surprise, he reached into the box. Snakes are territorial and react aggressively to intrusion.
"Hiss!" The snake hissed, flicking its red tongue.
"Old Mr. Edwards, be careful!" Iker warned, anxious as Layne reached in with his bare hands. Even Davon wore gloves when handling the snake.
"Hiss" The snake lunged, but Layne swiftly grabbed its vulnerable spot before it could bite. The snake wrapped around his arm, its attack thwarted. Thalia gasped.
"Be careful!" she exclaimed.
Just as a tragic scene seemed imminent, Layne expertly secured the snake, preventing it from biting.
