Listen to this chapter:

Celeste’s heart raced, the air between them thick with undeniable intimacy. She said, “Mr. Wrenford…” She swallowed nervously. Her eyes flashed with panic, but the man before her immediately noticed it.

“There’s an eyelash on your face,” Adrian said, releasing her chin and moving his hand to her face. His long fingers gently caressed her fair skin as he delicately brushed away a tiny eyelash.

Celeste instinctively stepped back, yet the air between them seemed strangely charged. “You’ve got sharp eyes, Mr. Wrenford,” she said, forcing herself to stay composed, curling her lips into a calm smile.

“Why are you so nervous? You didn’t seem nervous when we accidentally kissed the other day.”

His statement struck her like lightning, causing her eyes to widen in horror. She took a step back, staring at him in bewilderment. “We kissed?”

Celeste pointed at Adrian, then at herself, her eyes filled with even more surprise. “It was the night when you got drunk.” Her stunned expression amused him, and he teased, “It looks like you really don’t remember.”

Adrian’s lips curved slightly in a smile. She immediately reached out and grabbed his sleeve, but quickly let go when their eyes met. “Mr. Wrenford… A-Are you… serious? D-Did we really kiss after I got drunk?” she stammered.

“Why are you panicking? It’s not like this is the first time.”

Indeed, it wasn’t the first time their lips had touched. Adrian had given her mouth-to-mouth resuscitation during the fire last time. But CPR and kissing were different! She understood now why he had advised her not to drink alcohol anymore.

Celeste’s face turned a brilliant shade of red, like a fully ripened apple. “Don’t worry. I won’t ask you to take responsibility,” he said, suddenly turning to the side. “But you’re no longer innocent. What would Damien think if he found out?”

“You can’t tell him this!” she exclaimed anxiously.

Celeste instantly reached out and instinctively covered his lips. As his moist lips brushed against her palm, she turned flustered and retracted her hand, appearing calm. “I’m about to divorce him. There’s no need to cause more trouble now. Since you don’t mind, let’s just think of it as you giving me CPR again!”

“A kiss is a kiss. How can you compare that to CPR?”

Adrian’s lips curved into a dangerously attractive smirk. Celeste had never seen this side of him before. They’d been spending more time together lately, and he was nothing like the cold, expressionless man the rumors had made him out to be.

“Let’s just think of it as an accident. I’ll remember what you said, Mr. Wrenford. I won’t drink again.” She didn’t dare stay and argue with him any longer. “Eloise is still waiting for me at home. I need to make her dinner. Goodbye, Mr. Wrenford.”

Before he could respond, she darted back into the house. Adrian stood there, watching her retreating figure. The smile on his lips lingered a long time. He found himself more intrigued by her.
