Chapter 74

After Celeste got home, Adrian’s words lingered in her mind. She never imagined she would have kissed him that night. Aside from Damien, she had never shared such an intimate moment with another man. And this man happened to be Damien’s uncle. Just the thought of it was overwhelming enough. To make it worse, her mind began conjuring up images of the kiss. Celeste instinctively shook her head, trying to banish the images.

“Celeste, why are you shaking your head while cutting vegetables? If someone saw you, they’d assume that you were drunk,” a familiar voice emerged from the kitchen door.

Startled, Celeste shivered slightly. She turned around and saw Annie staring at her with curiosity. Regaining her composure, she replied, “Nothing! I was just thinking about something.”

“What kind of thought needs so much head-shaking? Are you sure you’re not drunk?” Annie walked over quickly, eyeing her with suspicion.

When Celeste heard the word “drunk,” the images came popping into her mind, and her face flushed red. “I’m not drunk. Why would I be drinking right now?”

Annie teased, “Well, you sure look the part because your face is as red as a tomato.”

Celeste instinctively nudged her arm and tried to change the subject. “Stop fooling around. I’ve got a serious matter to tell you.”

“What is it?”

Annie went to wash her hands and then helped prepare the vegetables.

“Adrian came earlier and expressed his wish to make Eloise his goddaughter.”

Annie halted abruptly when she heard this. “Why?”

Celeste took advantage of the pause between cutting vegetables and explained the situation from beginning to end.

“If that’s the case, I think that it’s a good move. If Eloise has Adrian backing her, no one would dare to mess with her.”

Celeste chuckled lowly and didn’t say anything more.

“What are you laughing at? Adrian’s status in the business world in Longdale is top-tier. Compared to him, your husband is still a few levels below.”

“Correction. The term ‘ex-husband’ would be more appropriate. Although we haven’t signed the papers, we’ve already long divorced in my heart,” Celeste stated solemnly.

“Sorry. It’s a slip of the tongue.” Annie immediately stroked Celeste’s back, calming her.

Celeste put the diced carrots on the plates without saying a single word.

“But honestly, why hasn’t that jerk signed the papers yet?” Annie asked.

“He keeps using Alaric’s poor health as leverage against me. And to be fair, it’s true. Alaric has always opposed our divorce.”

Hearing this, Annie grew agitated and argued, “Force him to sign the papers first. Alaric’s problem is secondary!”

“Okay,” Celeste nodded. “I’ll go see him tomorrow.”

“That’s more like it! You always get things done.” Annie gave her a thumbs-up.

Celeste merely chuckled.

The next day was a workday. Celeste assumed that Damien would be at Wrenford Corporation, and planned to speak with him about the divorce in person. But just as she reached the door, she spotted Lucy sitting on his lap through the half-open crack. Lucy’s arms were draped around Damien’s neck, her tone coquettish as she asked, “There’s a banquet tomorrow night. Will you come with me?”
