Chapter 96

Adrian’s fingers stopped tapping on the table the moment he saw Celeste’s and Annie’s reactions. He turned toward Celeste, his eyes losing some of their usual coldness. He asked, “Is that someone you know?”

Celeste glanced briefly at Adrian beside her before nodding. “She’s the woman who was with Lucy the last time you visited the clinic.”

Adrian’s mind quickly searched his memory, and after a moment, he gave a slight nod. “She sounds vaguely familiar.”

Then, the door to the treatment room opened from the inside, and Celeste quickly moved forward, casting a brief glance inside. Zander was severely beaten. He was covered in bruises and most likely had internal injuries, with blood dripping from the corner of his mouth.

Celeste had long heard that Adrian was ruthless, but she hadn’t expected his subordinates to be just as merciless.

“Now that we have the answer, let’s send him to the hospital. We can’t leave him here to ruin Ms. Morin’s place,” Adrian’s voice was low, his expression as indifferent as ever.

“Understood, Mr. Wrenford.”

“Let’s use the back door. It’s too crowded in the front.”

Rowan quickly stepped forward, leading Joshua away. Annie turned to Celeste. “I’ll go help.”

Celeste gave a light nod, watching them leave through the front door. Adrian’s gaze shifted back to Celeste. “Now that we’ve found the real culprit, how do you plan to handle this?”

Celeste instinctively turned her head to look at Adrian when she heard the familiar sound of his voice. Their eyes met, and her expression darkened for a quick moment.

There wasn’t much of a personal grudge between her and Simone. The real problem was with Lucy. Although Simone had been the one to take action, Celeste could clearly see the tangled web of connections leading straight to Lucy.

To be more precise, Simone must have been acting on Lucy’s orders and came here to target her. They had sent her such a huge “gift” on opening day, and now, on day three, it was finally being unwrapped. It was clear they were testing her limits.

A sharp snap of fingers suddenly rang in her ears, and Celeste’s thoughts were abruptly interrupted. She snapped back to the present, turning her head to meet Adrian’s gaze.

After taking a moment to calm herself, she spoke up. “This matter is likely still connected to Damien.”

“How does this involve my nephew?” Adrian’s brows furrowed slightly. “Is that woman, Simone, closely connected to him as well?”

“No,” Celeste shook her head, her voice laced with indifference. “The one who’s connected to Damien is Lucy.”

“You’re saying that Lucy sent Simone to come after you?”

“That’s just my guess for now. I can’t be completely certain without further investigation or interrogation.”

“Do you need my help?”

His voice was deep, and Celeste almost instinctively refused. “No, this is between me and her. I don’t want to drag anyone else into it.”

But then, Adrian suddenly stood up and moved toward her. “Anyone? Aren’t we family?”

Celeste froze slightly. Didn’t he know that she was about to divorce Damien? How could they still be considered family?

He was suddenly right in front of her, and the distance between them closed in an instant. She could feel his steady breathing, and his long, dark lashes cast soft shadows under the harsh lights.

She fought to control the rising tension in her chest. She gave him a half-smile and replied, “Damien and I are divorcing. So, I guess that means we’re not a family anymore, right?”
