Chapter 233

โ€œHoly goddess.โ€ Wendyโ€™s fingers twitched in my hair.

But Toya just nodded. โ€œAs I read more about spirit walking, I learned about the Mara.โ€ Toya wiped my arm and caused me to hiss again.

โ€œThe Mara?โ€

โ€œIt means bitter soul. Itโ€™s like what you explained. A lost soul, whether they lost themselves while they were still alive, or after they died, and they wander, looking for a life to take over. If you had read more about it all, you would have been prepared.โ€

โ€œHey now.โ€ I pulled back, but she pushed me back down.

โ€œLay down. I want to check your head.โ€ Toya pushed again and Wendy helped her part my hair. โ€œAmy.โ€ She hissed as she saw the damage.

I laid back down, but huffed out my breath. โ€œI read that book, inside and out.โ€

โ€œThere were a few pages stuck together. I donโ€™t know why.โ€ Toya tapped a page. โ€œWendy helped me figure it out.โ€

โ€œI had to use a tiny bit of water around the edges to release the pages from each other. Then I used a blow dryer to dry them again.โ€

โ€œSeriously?โ€ I hissed as Toyaโ€™s fingers brushed against a chunk of my scalp. It burned.

โ€œThere were a few pages of explanation, and a few other spells that I donโ€™t understand.โ€ Toya got up and started to walk away. โ€œStay down.โ€

I chuckled softly. โ€œShe is demanding.โ€

โ€œShe was worried.โ€ Wendyโ€™s voice was soft. โ€œReally worried because you screamed for us, you screamed our names, and I think this was the first time she couldnโ€™t do anything about it.โ€

She came back with a brush, a comb, a spray bottle, and some scissors. โ€œWhatโ€™s that for?โ€

โ€œBabe, your hair has been yanked out and cut in spots. Iโ€™m going to do my best to fix it in a way that no one will notice the bald spots.โ€ Toya pulled me up and made me lean forward so she could sit behind me on the sofa. She brushed the tangles out of my hair. โ€œYou scared me.โ€

โ€œYou scared us,โ€ Wendy corrected.

I nodded as Toya worked, but her hands froze when a phone rang. Wendy and Toya looked at their phones, but I recognized the ring. โ€œWendy, can you go grab my lock box? Itโ€™s my spare phone.โ€ She nodded and ran to my room.

โ€œWho could be calling you?โ€ Toya continued.

โ€œI donโ€™t know, but not many have the number.โ€

The ringing had stopped by the time I got the lock box open. I grabbed it out just as it rang again. I answered, putting it automatically on speaker. โ€œHello?โ€

โ€œAmy?โ€ The soft voice had my insides clench.

โ€œLynn?โ€ I hesitated. โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong? Why are you calling me? How are you calling me?โ€ A little panic set in.

โ€œIs secure,โ€ she finished, but her voice was still soft. โ€œYour father gave me a phone to connect with you if needed.โ€ I breathed a sigh of relief until my brain caught up to her words.

Chapter 234

โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong?โ€

โ€œYour dad, before he diedโ€ฆโ€ Her words trailed off, and the punch hit my gut. She didnโ€™t know.

โ€œLynnโ€”โ€

โ€œNo, let me finish. I donโ€™t have time.โ€ Her words came out in a rush. โ€œI had to run out here, away from Morgan. Since the king made you and Shannon stay at school, Morgan has been acting weird.โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean? Is my mom okay?โ€

โ€œI have your mom protected. I wonโ€™t allow anyone to get their claws into my Luna. But one time, Morgan tried to drug her with kudzu.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s that?โ€

โ€œA herb that induces a femaleโ€™s heat. If it wasnโ€™t for the fact that we caught him before she drank it, she would have been stuck.โ€

โ€œGoddess.โ€ Wendy whispered, but Toya kept snipping at my hair.

โ€œAre you and my mom okay?โ€ I worried at my lip. โ€œYou can both come here. I have a place you can stay.โ€ I didnโ€™t even know why I hadnโ€™t offered up my apartment.

โ€œYour mother wants to stay. Vince and Morgan are doing something. We just arenโ€™t sure yet.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€ I paused. โ€œBut why did you call me?โ€

โ€œBecause I saw Brandon in the pack house.โ€

โ€œWhy were you in the pack house?โ€

She drew in a breath. โ€œBecause I found my mate.โ€

I felt my chest warm. โ€œThatโ€™s amazing, Lynn.โ€

She hesitated. โ€œI rejected him.โ€

โ€œWhat? Why?โ€

โ€œBecause I found him hilt-deep inside of your sister.โ€ Her words were flat, but I could hear the pain that it hid.

โ€œWho?โ€ I had the sinking feeling. There was one wolf Shannon was with in my previous life that never found his mate, either. Please donโ€™t be him, I prayed to the goddess for this little tiny shred of hope. But in the next sentence, Lynn shattered it.

โ€œMy mate was the beta to Brandon. My mate was Derek.โ€
