Chapter 234
I closed my eyes in disbelief. โIs that bad?โ Toya leaned over and whispered. I just nodded.
โThis isnโt the end. The goddess has a plan.โ I told her, hoping it helped a little with the pain of everything she was dealing with. โShe wouldnโt do this to you unless there was a reason.โ
โI know. And I think this is the reason.โ She whispered, her voice growing lower.
โWhy?โ
โBecause everyday Vince commands me to come to the pack house, to sit next to him and Derek.โ
โWhat the fuck?โ Wendyโs eyes grew wide. โThatโs torture.โ
Lynn sniffled, and for the first time, I could hear how much this was killing her. โIt is. But only because he refuses to accept my rejection. Even though my wolf has accepted her fate and is trying her best to recoup, he wonโt let the link die. He calls to us every night and makes us come stand next to him every day. The bond on my side is shattered, but my wolf is still in pain.โ Lynn took a deep breath. โAnyway, I didnโt call you to complain.โ
โItโs okay if you did,โ I offered.
โThank you, Amy. I really appreciate it.โ I could hear her kick something. โAnd I might start taking that offer. But back to Vince and Brandon.โ
โHow was he there?โ I leaned closer to the phone. โThe king ordered all students to stay on campus.โ
โDid he actually command you?โ Her voice held a question.
I looked at Wendy and Toya, and both shook their heads. โNo.โ
โUnless the king actually commanded each of you personally, then it wouldnโt stick. Even if he did a mass command, a little-known fact is that even mass commands wear off eventually, depending on how many wolves are there. Obviously, the king has more power, so it would last longer, but a couple thousand people, over a couple of months, it would wear off for sure.โ
โBut why would he risk going home?โ
โThe kudzu. He came to grab the kudzu, which is why I am out in the middle of the forest at two in the morning, warning you.โ
I sat frozen. โHe got it for me?โ Wendy and Toya both growled.
โI overheard a small snippet. He thinks that if he can get you to go into heat, he can get you pregnant, and then you would mate with him to keep your reputation.โ
I laughed. โLike he cares about my reputation.โ
โHe doesnโt, but he knows you do.โ She huffed out a breath. โBrandon came and grabbed the kudzu, but it was Vince that sent warning bells off in my head.โ
โWhat do you mean?โ
โWhen Brandon was here, Vince pulled him aside. I overheard a little of their conversation. This is the plan for Brandon to mate you, but itโs also the plan for Vince to get his hands on your dadโs money and pack lands.โ A growl ripped from my throat, the first in months.
How dare they? Nixโs voice was soft but livid.
They will suffer, Meganโs voice sounded rabid. She was ready to kill them.
I closed my eyes and felt the tears fall. You guys are back. Give me a minute.
โI will keep an eye out and not drink or eat anything he gives me,โ I offered, distracted now.
โGood.โ There was a snap in the distance. โI have to go, but I will let you know what else I catch.โ
โOkay. Thank you for warning me. And Lynn?โ
โYeah?โ
โIโll explain later, but I need you to know that our pack is okay.โ
โSwear it.โ Her voice was a little desperate.
โI swear it. And Lynn, protect my mom.โ
โWith my life.โ Then she was gone.
โAmy? Are you okay?โ Wendy wiped the tears from my face.
โNix and Megan. They are back.โ I closed my eyes and ran to the edge of my forest, where my wolves were waiting for me. I dropped to my knees and wrapped my arms around them. Their bodies had grown too thin. โAre you okay?โ
Nix shivered as she placed her head on my shoulder. โTired, but alive.โ
โExhausted,โ Megan agreed as she curled up at my knees, placing her head on my knees. โIโm sorry.โ
โWhy are you sorry?โ I whispered as I slipped my fingers into her coat.
โI couldnโt tell you.โ She closed her eyes.
โThatโs on me, little one.โ Nix wavered as she collapsed next to Megan. โI commanded your silence, and we could have died. I would have died if you hadnโt supported me.โ
โNever do that again.โ My words held anger, an anger I didnโt know I felt until that moment. โYou jeopardized everythingโyour lives, my life, everything.โ
Nix huffed. โI know. Iโm sorry.โ
โWe are a team. We work together.โ I leaned over my two wolves and whispered my truth. โI thought you hated me. I thought you turned on meโฆ I thought you left me.โ I could feel the panic those words induced in me.
โNever, Amy. I would never abandon you.โ
โMe either.โ My two wolves fell asleep at my feet, and for the first time in a long time, I felt whole.
