Chapter 371

When we got back to the office, Ternen turned with a smile, taking the gift bags from around Alannahโ€™s desk. โ€œIโ€™ll be back at the end of the day.โ€ He kissed her and then left us to finish our day.

I settled into my office and started working on another firewall when Rick came in. โ€œHey, are you ready for your next challenge?โ€

I smiled. โ€œWhat did you have in mind?โ€

โ€œI want to see how well you know our systems.โ€ I leaned in, excitement on my face. โ€œIโ€™m going to hide again, but this time, itโ€™s going to be deeper.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€ I turned my chair to face him. โ€œWhatโ€™s the catch?โ€

He smiled. โ€œThis is a training exercise for you to recognize the flaws in your own designs.โ€

I twirled my hands around each other. โ€œWhat does that even mean?โ€

He cackled. โ€œIt means you canโ€™t trip the firewall. If you do, you have to start over.โ€

โ€œAre you insane?โ€ I stood hunched over my computer. โ€œHow is that even possible?โ€ I pretended to be upset, but inside I was dancing. He was teaching me how to get around the systems.

He shrugged. โ€œItโ€™s how my teacher taught me.โ€

โ€œYour teacherโ€ฆfrom school? We didnโ€™t learn this in school.โ€ I slammed back into my seat.

Rick shook his head. โ€œNot at school. In my old pack. Itโ€™s how I got so good with computers.โ€ He laughed and tossed me a paper. โ€œIโ€™ll give you a head start.โ€ He pointed at the paper. โ€œRead that and start. Butโ€ฆโ€ He held up his finger.

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œDuring the mornings, I still expect you to pump out the coding I need. You work until the dayโ€™s coding is done, and then you practise this.โ€

I groaned. โ€œHow am I supposed to do that?โ€ I rolled my neck. โ€œI will never have time.โ€ Rick just shrugged.

โ€œThen I guess you will never become good at this job and you might as well quit now.โ€ I growled, and he smiled. โ€œGood luck.โ€ He turned and left.

โ€œWait!โ€ I stood and called after him. He came back and lifted a brow.

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œCan I work on this at home?โ€

He shook his head. โ€œNope. Iโ€™m honestly not being spiteful. There is just no way to remote into our system. I created it that way. But if you want, you can bring your laptop in tomorrow and when I have time, I can make a dummy server on it, so you can practice at home.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€

He nodded. โ€œIโ€™m not trying to stunt your growth, only push you to be better.โ€ He winked at me and turned to leave again.

โ€œThank you,โ€ I called after him.

โ€œYouโ€™re welcome,โ€ he called back. Then a door opened. โ€œAlpha Vince.โ€ Rick said it loud enough, like he was surprised, but I know it was to alert me he was here.

โ€œRick, are you busy?โ€ I could hear his tone and I knew he wasnโ€™t asking.

โ€œFor you? Of course not. Let me justโ€ฆโ€ He leaned into my office door. โ€œIโ€™m going to have to put a pause in our training. If my meeting with Alpha Vince goes past the end of the day, just head on home and we can try again tomorrow.โ€

I gave a thumbs up. โ€œSounds good.โ€ Then I turned back to my computer and started back coding a firewall.

It must have been longer than I thought when I finished the code, as when I finally pulled my eyes away from the computer, my phone rang, scaring me. I grabbed it from the desk and answered. โ€œHello?โ€

โ€œHey baby,โ€ my momโ€™s voice rang out. โ€œHowโ€™s your day?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s been pretty great. Is there anything wrong?โ€ I flicked my eyes to my screen as I opened the next coding program he wanted me to work on.

โ€œNo.โ€ She chuckled. โ€œYou must be distracted.โ€

โ€œYeah, I just got finished with a project when you called. Why?โ€ I clicked open the next file and my mom laughed harder.

โ€œLook at the time, baby.โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€ I glanced at my phone screen and then down at the clock in the corner of my computer. โ€œHoly crap.โ€

She snorted. โ€œYeah. Youโ€™re late for dinner. Hurry home.โ€ Then she hung up.

I got up and walked out of my office. Alannah was still at her desk, but Ternen was here. โ€œHey.โ€ I looked at them with a confused look, but Alannahโ€™s eyes cut to Rickโ€™s door. โ€œEveryone is working late tonight.โ€ I chuckled and went to my desk to turn things off.

Nix, tell Mom to call me again and tell me to invite my work friends to dinner. Be quick. She left without looking back. Within a minute, my phone rang again as I shut off my computer. I answered on speaker again with a laugh. โ€œHey, Mom. Iโ€™m shutting down right now.โ€

โ€œNo, I know.โ€ She laughed. โ€œMorgan and Shannon said they were busy with Alpha Vince and Brandon tonight, and I made too much food. Invite your friends from work for dinner.โ€

โ€œMom.โ€ I sighed.

But she cut me off. โ€œI want to meet them. Ask.โ€ Then she hung up.
