Listen to this chapter:

I sighed and slammed my head back against my chair, then groaned. โ€œFuck.โ€ I put everything away into my purse, then stood. I walked out and smiled. โ€œHey, I had a question.โ€

โ€œSure.โ€ Ternen smiled at me, but I could see the tension below the surface.

โ€œMy mom wants me to invite you all to dinner.โ€ I checked my phone. โ€œHas Rick left yet?โ€

Alannah shook her head. โ€œNo.โ€ She smiled as she put her things in her purse. โ€œAnd we would love to join you at dinner.โ€

I nodded and then walked to Rickโ€™s office door. I knocked and swung the door open. I froze when I saw Vince holding Rick by the throat. โ€œUgh, Iโ€™m sorry. I didnโ€™t mean to interrupt.โ€ I spun in a circle, facing away from them.

Vince grunted, and I heard Rick take a deep breath in. โ€œAmy, what are you doing in here?โ€

โ€œI see that.โ€ I coughed. โ€œMy mom called me and asked me to invite Rick and Alannah to dinner.โ€

โ€œWell, heโ€™s busy.โ€

I turned around and grimaced. โ€œWhile I appreciate that, this is my mom.โ€ I forced an awkward smile. โ€œShe wonโ€™t listen to me. Can you call her?โ€

Vince huffed out a breath, then turned to me. โ€œOf course.โ€ He pulled out his phone and dialed my mom. There was a brief pause, and then her voice rang out. โ€œHello, Vince. I called because Amy came to take Rick to your house for dinner, but he is currently in a meeting with me.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s in a meeting with you?โ€ My motherโ€™s voice dropped an octave. โ€œAre you sure? Is anyone else there?โ€ Her voice took on a thread of anger.

Vince looked at the phone in confusion before he glanced at me, but I just shrugged. โ€œYes, I am sure. Why?โ€ Vince was trying to gain some ground and take back the power my mother so easily took.

โ€œWell, Alpha Vince.โ€ Vince winced. My mother only used the title if she was pissed or in a setting in front of others that she had to uphold titles. โ€œMy dear husband said he was having dinner with you.โ€ Her voice was now ice. โ€œHe actually just texted me saying you two were elbow deep in reports and that he wonโ€™t be home for hours.โ€ She growled, and it was savage. โ€œAnd here youโ€™re telling me you are in a meeting with Amyโ€™s boss. So Alpha, where the fuck is my husband?โ€

You could hear a pin drop as Vince looked to me with wide eyes. He mouthed "Oh shit" and then chuckled. โ€œAinsley,โ€ he started, but you could tell he didnโ€™t know where Morgan was. โ€œMorgan is in my office right now. We were in a meeting, but I came to talk with Rick.โ€

โ€œIf you arenโ€™t there, then why did he lie?โ€

Vince laughed. โ€œHe didnโ€™t, I just zipped down here to go over things with Rick.โ€

โ€œYou know, Alpha, I think you are covering for Morgan. I donโ€™t think you have been with him for hours.โ€ The truth settled around us, and Vince paced. โ€œIf that is the case, then I can only assume that my husband is cheating.โ€ Vince froze.

โ€œThatโ€™s a crazy accusation, Ainsley.โ€ He tried to counter, but she scoffed.

โ€œIs it? We have been struggling for years because of the bullshit he pulled. And now I know heโ€™s lying to me and you are covering for him. Iโ€™ll be petitioning the king for a dissolution.โ€

โ€œAinsley, wait, you canโ€™t.โ€ Vince tried to convince her to hold on.

โ€œUnless you can get my husband on the phone within five minutes, which, if he is in your office, should be easy, Iโ€™ll be calling the king in ten minutes. Better run.โ€ She disconnected the call, and Vince turned a pale face to me.

โ€œWhat just happened?โ€ He looked a little lost.

โ€œI donโ€™t know. She made dinner, and then Shannon and Morgan said they were busy. She called me and told me to invite Rick and Alannah and then, well, you heard.โ€ I let my mouth flop open. โ€œAlphaโ€ฆ you have been here since lunch. Morgan definitely lied to my mom.โ€

His eyes snapped to mine. โ€œYou canโ€™t tell her that.โ€

I lifted my brow. โ€œI donโ€™t think it will matter. You only have four minutes to find him before she calls the king.โ€

โ€œOh fuck.โ€ Vince turned and ran out of the room.

Rick turned to me with a blank face. โ€œDo you think your mother will still want us to come to dinner?โ€

I nodded. โ€œOf course, she will need a distraction. Why donโ€™t you invite your wife and daughter? Iโ€™ll call my mom and tell her Iโ€™ll be bringing extra. That way, she will have to cook more and will work off some of her anger.โ€

โ€œWill that work?โ€ Rick typed a quick message on his phone.

โ€œWe can hope.โ€
