Chapter 490

The anger dissipated, and I felt I could think clearly. I took a deep breath as Megan ran to the cabin; we shifted as the back door opened. My mother stepped out, frowning. โ€œWhere have you been?โ€ she growled softly. โ€œI woke up, and you were gone.โ€

I snorted. โ€œI went for a run.โ€ I tried to slip past her, but her hand shot out.

โ€œThatโ€™s all?โ€ Her eyes tightened, but I kissed her.

โ€œLetโ€™s sit down for breakfast, and Iโ€™ll go over what happened.โ€ She watched me a moment, then nodded. We entered the cabin; Wendy was serving the girls breakfast.

โ€œHey,โ€ Wendy said, raising an eyebrow. โ€œYou went out early.โ€ I nodded.

I turned to the girls. โ€œOnce youโ€™ve eaten, can you do me a favor?โ€ I kissed Carlyโ€™s head.

โ€œOf course,โ€ Carly said, bouncing and smiling.

โ€œYes,โ€ Abby smiled.

I looked her over and rubbed her head. โ€œHow are you feeling today?โ€

Abbyโ€™s smile widened. โ€œGreat. Better than any of my best days!โ€ She looked up with wide, happy eyes. โ€œAm I really cured?โ€

โ€œYou tell me,โ€ I laughed. โ€œYou just said you feel better than ever before.โ€

She nodded. โ€œIโ€™m not tired, and thereโ€™s no pain.โ€

Rick and Shelly appeared in the dining room doorway. I winked at them over Abbyโ€™s head. โ€œAny symptoms at all?โ€ I asked, raising an eyebrow.

She thought before shaking her head. โ€œI feel good.โ€

โ€œThen I think we have our answer.โ€ I looked up at the couple. โ€œHow do you both feel?โ€

They looked at each other, then Rick entered. โ€œAmy, I donโ€™t know how Iโ€™ll ever thank you. You saved my family.โ€ He grabbed my hand. โ€œSaving my pup would have been enough, but then you saved Shelly, and I knew Abby would be safe. I never expected you to save me, not after everything I did to you.โ€

โ€œRick,โ€ Shelly said, grabbing his other hand, but Rick shook his off.

โ€œYou saved me even when I didnโ€™t deserve it.โ€ He dropped to his knees. โ€œWraith told me what you did. I hadnโ€™t heard from my wolf in almost two years, and I didnโ€™t know why.โ€ He looked up, tears in his eyes. โ€œHe was busy saving me, and I was too stupid to realize it. But now heโ€™s caught me up on everything, starting with what you did.โ€

โ€œRick,โ€ I said, pulling him up; Shelly wrapped her arms around him. โ€œYou donโ€™t have to thank me.โ€ I nudged him, and he met my eyes. โ€œYou might think youโ€™re unworthy, but I disagree. Andโ€ฆโ€ I paused as he shook his head. โ€œโ€ฆneither does the goddess.โ€ I patted his shoulder. โ€œCan you get the others? We need to talk, and the girls have agreed to play upstairs.โ€

I looked at the girls, who were shoveling food into their mouths. โ€œBe done in a minute,โ€ Abby mumbled around a full mouth, making me laugh.

โ€œItโ€™s okay, sweet girl. Iโ€™m going to shower, and then we can reconvene.โ€ I patted both girls and headed upstairs, meeting Lynn on the landing. She looked anxious. โ€œHow are you doing?โ€

She took a breath and straightened. โ€œHonest answer?โ€ she asked, and I nodded. โ€œI still hear his breathing in the dark, but Iโ€™m better.โ€ I nodded, raising a hand to touch her shoulder, waiting for her nod before rubbing her arm.

โ€œBright side?โ€ she asked, looking at me. โ€œWeโ€™re leaving today.โ€ I watched her tense. โ€œHeโ€™ll be dead within the week.โ€

She shuddered. โ€œI donโ€™t know if Iโ€™m ready.โ€ Her voice was a whisper.

โ€œYou are,โ€ my motherโ€™s voice rang out. We turned to see her coming up the stairs. โ€œAnd if you arenโ€™t, Amy can help you eliminate the threat. But,โ€ she grabbed Lynnโ€™s hand, โ€œyou are stronger than you think. You can do this.โ€

Lynn took a deep breath and nodded. โ€œI can do this.โ€

My mother nodded. โ€œYou hold the power to your own destiny. You can take back your life.โ€

Lynn nodded, then turned to me. โ€œIโ€™ll be ready.โ€

โ€œGood.โ€ Then I left them to shower.
