Chapter 490
The anger dissipated, and I felt I could think clearly. I took a deep breath as Megan ran to the cabin; we shifted as the back door opened. My mother stepped out, frowning. โWhere have you been?โ she growled softly. โI woke up, and you were gone.โ
I snorted. โI went for a run.โ I tried to slip past her, but her hand shot out.
โThatโs all?โ Her eyes tightened, but I kissed her.
โLetโs sit down for breakfast, and Iโll go over what happened.โ She watched me a moment, then nodded. We entered the cabin; Wendy was serving the girls breakfast.
โHey,โ Wendy said, raising an eyebrow. โYou went out early.โ I nodded.
I turned to the girls. โOnce youโve eaten, can you do me a favor?โ I kissed Carlyโs head.
โOf course,โ Carly said, bouncing and smiling.
โYes,โ Abby smiled.
I looked her over and rubbed her head. โHow are you feeling today?โ
Abbyโs smile widened. โGreat. Better than any of my best days!โ She looked up with wide, happy eyes. โAm I really cured?โ
โYou tell me,โ I laughed. โYou just said you feel better than ever before.โ
She nodded. โIโm not tired, and thereโs no pain.โ
Rick and Shelly appeared in the dining room doorway. I winked at them over Abbyโs head. โAny symptoms at all?โ I asked, raising an eyebrow.
She thought before shaking her head. โI feel good.โ
โThen I think we have our answer.โ I looked up at the couple. โHow do you both feel?โ
They looked at each other, then Rick entered. โAmy, I donโt know how Iโll ever thank you. You saved my family.โ He grabbed my hand. โSaving my pup would have been enough, but then you saved Shelly, and I knew Abby would be safe. I never expected you to save me, not after everything I did to you.โ
โRick,โ Shelly said, grabbing his other hand, but Rick shook his off.
โYou saved me even when I didnโt deserve it.โ He dropped to his knees. โWraith told me what you did. I hadnโt heard from my wolf in almost two years, and I didnโt know why.โ He looked up, tears in his eyes. โHe was busy saving me, and I was too stupid to realize it. But now heโs caught me up on everything, starting with what you did.โ
โRick,โ I said, pulling him up; Shelly wrapped her arms around him. โYou donโt have to thank me.โ I nudged him, and he met my eyes. โYou might think youโre unworthy, but I disagree. Andโฆโ I paused as he shook his head. โโฆneither does the goddess.โ I patted his shoulder. โCan you get the others? We need to talk, and the girls have agreed to play upstairs.โ
I looked at the girls, who were shoveling food into their mouths. โBe done in a minute,โ Abby mumbled around a full mouth, making me laugh.
โItโs okay, sweet girl. Iโm going to shower, and then we can reconvene.โ I patted both girls and headed upstairs, meeting Lynn on the landing. She looked anxious. โHow are you doing?โ
She took a breath and straightened. โHonest answer?โ she asked, and I nodded. โI still hear his breathing in the dark, but Iโm better.โ I nodded, raising a hand to touch her shoulder, waiting for her nod before rubbing her arm.
โBright side?โ she asked, looking at me. โWeโre leaving today.โ I watched her tense. โHeโll be dead within the week.โ
She shuddered. โI donโt know if Iโm ready.โ Her voice was a whisper.
โYou are,โ my motherโs voice rang out. We turned to see her coming up the stairs. โAnd if you arenโt, Amy can help you eliminate the threat. But,โ she grabbed Lynnโs hand, โyou are stronger than you think. You can do this.โ
Lynn took a deep breath and nodded. โI can do this.โ
My mother nodded. โYou hold the power to your own destiny. You can take back your life.โ
Lynn nodded, then turned to me. โIโll be ready.โ
โGood.โ Then I left them to shower.
